If this is true--and one should remember that Chirac has had a pretty casual relationship with speaking the truth--then what surprises me is that Bush's team didn't advise him that this is NOT the way to make a pitch to the French. The supposed bonding that took place with Blair re Christianity couldn't apply here.

I’ve googled the story, read a few blogs, and have found one thing very comforting, namely that among the Bush defenders there were not one who claimed he was perfectly right in identifying Gog and Magog at work. It was either condemnation of a lying Saddam-loving Chirac, an attempted demonstration of adequate secular reasons for Bush to go to war, or a comparison with other American presidents who as warriors claimed to fight for the primary Christian god - which seems to have been all of them.

The story is a bit old, here’s a 2007 report with a bit of biblical explanation and lots of what I hope is mostly paranoia...

From a distance, this story evokes only mirth. The idea that the USA was led by an individual who failed to distinguish between reality and the religious Märchen of his 12 step recovery is too fantastical to be true.

No, it's not.

It is mind boggling that the belief of a leader, or even a core insider group, could so convince the State and Defense Departments, the CIA, Congress, several nations.

The Iraq war never made sense to me, even with the possibility of nuclear WMD. They seemed to be quite far from developing anything if all they had was a centrifuge, especially with ongoing UN inspections.

I thought the motivation was a sense of unfinished business from the first war, coupled with the idea that it would be easy and quick.

If it _is_ true, it may be an indication that our former brave leader was going a bit mental. I've always supposed that he was only faking being quite that dumb in order to seem more like a "regular guy" than like the the privileged scion of a rich and powerful political family.

But if this story holds water, well, thank heavens it didnt end even more badly than it did.

GWBush was mixed up with all manor of religious lunacy during his first days in office. Many of his advisors and appointees were religiously sympatico (not a problem unless sympatico means nuts, too).

Remember Ashcroft hiding Justice behind a cloth, attempting to hide her nakedness, but symbolic of cutting Justice off from the people she is meant to serve. There was a rumor (I don't like to trade in rumors, so caveat emptor here) that Bush was anointed in the basement of the Capital by a religious organization headed up by Sun Myung Moon (How Christians get mixed up with a man who claims to be the "new messiah" is beyond me. BTW, I identify this as rumor, but I think there really is more to it than just rumor. I can't quickly put my hands on a corroborating story.)
