I'll have to wait for the book to be returned to my local library, so I may not be able to start for a few weeks.

Is there a volunteer to set up some threads?

I assume most members will read an English version. I hope one of you volunteers to set up the threads.

I haven't received the Norwegian edition yet, so I don't know how it is divided (parts, chapters).

I'll extract my copy a bit later on today and set up some threads ...

There's a rather long Wikipedia article (characters etc.) on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_and_Fate

I cannot find any SparkNotes on this novel

I'm in.
I just ordered my copy -- I can start in a week.
It looks like there has been only one English translation by Robert Chandler.
The story of the book is a good read in itself ... The original manuscript was confiscated by KGB officers in 1961. Resurfacing in the West some twenty years later, smuggled out on microfilm, Grossman died in 1964 without having seen it published.

Right, having extracted my copy from the book pile (this time without any punitive actions by other classic volumes so I think it's approved) I can see that it's split into three parts so I'll set up threads and one for discussion of the historical background of the author/text.

I received a Norwegian edition just now.
It contains a brief autobiography.
A letter from Grossman to his mother.
An article about L&F by Grossman's friend, the poet and translator Semyon Lipkin (1911-2003)
Russian names
List of characters (12 pages)
and
A short dictionary.
I assume Life and Fate will be a great read.

I got lucky today. I walked in to Half Price Books and there it was, like it was waiting for me. Y'all just don't pick small books, do you? In any case, it looks to be good.

I read it several years ago and am not ready for a reread yet, but I will be following all of you. It is a brilliant book, and one of my favorites not just of the year I read it, but of all the books I've read.

^ Like a top. Have to take it slowly and remind myself who's who when their different names are mentioned. The list of characters comes in handy here.

Got my copy from the library yesterday. Tomorrow is shaping up to be a busy day so I won't get to it until Tuesday but I am looking forward to getting started.
