Now that we're comfortably into Henry James (and I admit I'm finding The Golden Bowl tough-going at the moment), it's time to think about the next two upcoming months!
Same rules as always--nominate up to two, second as many as you want. Those that are seconded make the poll. Nominations will go through the 14th, the first poll through the 20th, with a run-off (if necessary) for December happening afterwards! :)

I'd like to nominate Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster. Because I have a lot of their books on my shelves, but have read very few of them!

Mrs. Henry Wood, huh? I think that's the first time I've ever heard her mentioned anywhere. I own some of her books--they're very old, so they're books-as-decoration that I never planned to read. Looking at her name makes me smile--how often do you see that form of a name for an author? Talk about offensive to 21st century feminism. So what does she write about, Christina?

>6 Nickelini: Joyce, victorian sensation novels, much in the same vein as M. E. Braddon.

I'll nominate Penelope Fitzgerald and leave it at that for now.

I would like to nominate Thomas Hardy and second Somerset Maugham

#7 - Oh, well in that case, I definitely second Mrs. Henry Wood. (How come the touchstone works for you, but not me?)

>11 Nickelini:: She has the secret decoder ring.

I'll nominate Emile Zola and second Thomas Hardy.

Oh, arubabookwoman;...................... you thought about this for a while.
I was very impulsive but am really happy with my choices.
However, I will in addition, second:
Emile Zola,
Jane Austen and
Mrs. Henry Wood (or Ellen Wood)
thank you,

Seconding/thirding, etc. Thomas Hardy and Charles Dickens. Nominating Elizabeth von Arnim.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Elizabeth von Arnim writes so beautifully that I think all of us would love to read her.
Since we can second as many as we wish, I will second her.
thank you,

Have all her vmc's so I am spoilt for choice with Arnim. I have not read any of her books yet. Looking forward to November.

englishrose60--I'e seen the movie of Enchanted April, but am clueless otherwise. Guidance would be appreciated.
23teelgee
I just bought Elizabeth and Her German Garden last month -- I must have had a premonition!
24englishrose60
theaelizabeth, as I have not read any of her books yet so I can't be of much help except to say that other members have recommended Enchanted April and Elizabeth and Her German Garden. As I have so many Arnim books I intend to read them chronologically and see how far I get with them next month.

>Thanks, englishrose60. I think I'll see if either of those two are in my local library.

Woot! I plan to read either Elizabeth and her German Garden or The Caravaners.
Meanwhile I am still searching the house for Portrait of a Lady.... my TBR pile is spread over several cupboards/boxes :)

It appears E. M. Forster is the winner for December. He should be an interesting follow-up to Elizabeth von Arnim, as, coincidentally, he was the English tutor to her children for a time.

How very, very interesting Christina. There must have been a great deal of interesting discussion going on within that household what with all her other literary friends as well.
Thank you for that bit of trivia.
So we have:
November: Elizabeth von Arnim and
December: E. M. Forster
(:-( I voted for Sweden.) hee hee!~!
belva
damn touchstones!~!
