I'm still reading The Swarm.

I finished Blood Meridian which was a loopy ride through wanton bloody violence. The judge is a superhuman villain. Great writing - I loved it.

Note to self, book number 156 ( so I work out out many I read this year)

Now reading The Cement Garden

Happy New Year all!

Enjoying The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy after the bleakness of revolutionary Russia in Dr Zhivago, though I expect The Woodlanders will end in tragic circumstances like so many of Hardy's other novels.

I picked up The Cancer Ward at the library. I'm a little nervous because I didn't really enjoy dr. Zhivago and I don't know if I'm ready for another Russian author. Why does every character in Russian books have multiple names?! Reading War and Peace I had to have a cheat sheet as a bookmark to keep everyone's multiple names together.

Currently 182 pages into Gone with the wind by Margaret Mitchell, got it for Christmas, but haven't had too many opportunities to read it. Surprisingly, I'm finding it quite easy to read, and more enjoyable than I expected. I was daunted by the size at first, but I think this is quite an achievable one.

29BekkaJo
Edited: Jan 7, 2010, 2:48 am

#28 Gone with the Wind is a total shock isn't it! When I read it I was expecting to hate it (I was working my way through the BBC Top 100 at that point - still not finished that...) and yet it's totally excellent!

Hi, I'm new to this group :-)

I've only read about 50 books from the 1001 list until now.

This year I want to read at least 30 or maybe 40 more.

In January I'll read definitely Wuthering Heights and probably Dr Zhivago

But first I have to finish East of Eden (which should be on the list, it's fantastic)

#27 I'm also reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and also love it. Must admit to not knowing much about it before hand, and the format really surprised me, I was expecting a traditional mystery I suppose, not just deductions. Whats your favourite one?

#28 & #29 I too was completely suprised with Gone with the Wind, I knew nothing about it before hand, and just decided to read it because its always on the best-loved book lists. Whats your thoughts on the movie? I must admit to never seeing it and I'm not sure whether I should now or not.

I'm dedicating some January holiday reading time to George Orwell. I've just started Keep the Aspidistra Flying and have Coming Up For Air waiting. I'm thinking of revisiting Animal Farm as it's been a while since I last read it.

I also read The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter which an extremely short Japanese folk tale.

I just finished Remains of the Day. I started it way back as part of a group read. I was enjoying it, but kept losing my place while reading and just kind of lost interest in finishing it. So, I started again from the beginning and finally read it. Ishiguro does a phenomenal job of characterization.

51soffitta1
Edited: Jan 17, 2010, 9:16 am

re 49 - I really enjoyed Androids, and I love it when you find you are reading a 1001 book by accident. I knocked one off the list in the summer, Nervous Conditions, which I didn't notice was on the list until I was updating the spreadsheet version I have a couple of months later. :))

I read The Old Man and the Sea at the beginning of the month, excellent.
At the moment I am reading The Grass is Singing by Lessing, really gripping me, a town girl falling apart after marrying a farmer in Rhodesia. Still reading Les Miserables for the 1010 Challenge readalong, good stuff.

Just finished Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Excellent. I highly recommend it. Do not be overwhelmed by the size. If you want to dare to read on huge book a year, pick this one.

Going to start A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. I need to read some small things now.

56hdcclassic
Jan 19, 2010, 2:28 am

Beside that Pale View of Hills I mentioned above, I read The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie earlier and now They Shoot Horses, Don't They which was pretty grim but I can see why existentialists loved that...are we allowed to mention those reality TV shows related to that book?

The last book also reminded me of En flyktning krysser sitt spor which made me look at the 1001 list and notice there isn't a single Sandemose book in it, which is just sad.

Amyway, i seem to be tackling a bunch of these short 20th century novels, maybe it's time to take a look at some of those bricks from 19th century...

Jan 19, 2010, 10:30 am

Finished A Modest Proposal last night. It was ok and amusing. My wife just about fell out when I told her what it was about.

I am now reading Life and Death of Harriett Frean by May Sinclair. Not a difficult read at all. Harriett's mother reminds me of my mother--very sacrificial.

I just finished The Way of All Flesh. It was much, much funnier than I was expecting (I was thinking it would be more along the lines of Maugham). It was actually a satire on a religious upbringing. We also finished reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and are now onto The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, which are apparently not 1001 material. They are both extremely enjoyable.

I have just started Small Island. I've heard good things.

STILL working through The Unconsoled. I get a strange sense from this one. The longer it goes on, the more one gets that Ishiguro-esque sense of complete control and focus, but the whole thing is SO weird and SO discombobulated that it's just not easy to stick with. I like it, but I don't LOVE it, like I liked, say, The Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go.

Next one will probably be a shorter one. Maybe Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates.

81Nickelini
Edited: Jan 30, 2010, 12:18 am

Well, I think at this very late date in the month it's clear that I won't be reading any 1001 books. However, i did read the short story "In a Grove" (aka "In a Bamboo Grove"), which is one of the short stories that makes up Rashomon. I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to more by this author.

Still working on Pride and Prejudice... I had hoped to finish it quicker, but I bought a house that has to be remodeled so I'm spending a lot of time tearing out old wallpaper, flooring and even a ceiling. And before you ask: yes, it will have a dedicated library. And of course, it is the largest room in the house :-)
