I want to present a very complex issue. It is complex because in fault finding it is important to clasify a bug as fundamental bug / issue or as a subsequent bug / issue.
Lets assume that all books are imported from data sources which have Unicode normalized records (LoC does not).
The full lenght (20 charactes) author url /author/muumlllerguttenbrunn covers:
a: « Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn »
author of Von Eugenius bis Josephus: Roman
b: « Alexandra Müller-Guttenbrunn »
author of Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn als Feuilletonist
note: because of the data source used the the author is at the author url /author/mllerguttenbrunnalex
c: « Herbert Müller-Guttenbrunn »
author of Mensch und Erde der Weg zur äusseren Freiheit
d: « Roderich Müller-Guttenbrunn »
author of Die Studenten von Hohenstadt: Roman aus Österreich anno 1914
This would be a clasical case to split the authors sharing a common url.
One can aproach the complex issues from different sites but I do not thing that can solve all contradicting (conflicting) issues.
1: I woundered mainly because of the way combination works. I assumed that the syntax is fixed
authormerge.php?authors=top level/second level
but I can see that LT is making an « author url arbitration » .
Both links authormerge.php?authors=muumlllerguttenbrunn/mllerguttenbrunnadam and authormerge.php?authors=mllerguttenbrunnadam/muumlllerguttenbrunn link the new stile url using « ouml » to the popular (this is because of historical reasons) url.
I wonder if it would be possible to force way these urls are combined. Maybe some LT stuff can post a topic where they can impose the combine levels.
What is LT's opinion about this?
subsequent issues:
i) displayed author name in catalog.php , catalog_bottom.php (etc.?)
/catalog.php?view=gangleri&tag=Herbert+M%C3%BCller-Guttenbrunn displays the wrong author name for #c
/catalog.php?view=gangleri&tag=Roderich+M%C3%BCller-Guttenbrunn displays the wrong author name for #c
please note also the tabs:
/catalog.php?view=gangleri&tag=Adam+M%C3%BCller-Guttenbrunn
/catalog.php?view=gangleri&tag=Alexandra+M%C3%BCller-Guttenbrunn
ii) I could not see any meaningfull way for combine
iii) /search_author.php?searchbox=M%C3%BCller-Guttenbrunn will not display the four authors
Conclusion: Please let us discuss the further steps first before taking any further (as combining) action.

I will collect similar authors / books with the tag /catalog/gangleri&tag=¬20+character+limit .

I believe Tim is planning on replacing the current method of putting a form of the author name in the URL with a new system of using numerical ids for authors. I don't think he wants to spend a lot of time tweaking the current system.

>3 jjwilson61:: Thanks! Which is the best place (group) to get informed about such technical improvements?

Here? :) If you keep an eye on most threads here and in the Bugs and Site Talks, you pick up what they are up to. If you ask where you can get official messages - sorry, nowhere. In most cases you get the message when it is already implemented.

New Features is the place where announcements are made. Sometimes LT staff will post in this group as they're working on things.

You might also want to ask Tim to add you to the Board for Extreme Thing Advances group, the BETA group.
