Women in the Military (any time period, any nationality (and pretty near any language))
Japanese Swords (Japanese, English, French, German)
Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) or Kyudo (Japanese Archery) (any language)
Japanese History (especially if the book has pictures!) (Japanese, English, French, German)
War of 1812.

I'm trying to get through the Great Books program of Mortimer Adler (sort of an extra-curricular activity to try and supplement my current University of Chicago education with the "original" one Adler and Robert Maynard Hutchins proposed in the 1930s).
I'm sure some of you have old dusty sets hanging around from the door-to-door salesmen days. While I dont' think I need a full set just yet (also I'll be moving in the summer and I don't want to add those to the books i already have to lug around) I'd love to mooch some books piecemeal.
If possible I'd like to focus on the "First Year" only, so I can do it "in order". Can anyone help me out? condition doesn't matter as long as it's readable.
EDIT: also wanted is Adler's How to Read a Book. or any books by Adler. That guy is my jam.

A few months ago, there was someone on here looking for Steeple Hill Love Inspired series books. I was in my local used book store today and they got a huge stack in. They are all random titles, in very good condition. If you are still interested in them, let me know what titles you are looking for and I will go check for you.
On a related note: I realized today why that store is my favorite used book store. They know I collect some hard to find authors, and when I showed up today, they had a few behind the counter for me, just in case I needed them for my collection. So amazing!

Are there any readers of Elle magazine who are planning to buy the issue on sale tomorrow and planning to throw it away once they've read it? If you are, please don't!!

P.S - I know of other Swifties who'd love the issue too, so if you have a copy but someone has already offered me one, please let me know and I might mooch it anyway!

As a linguist, I am somewhat concerned that you are working on Spanish, Mandarin, and English at the same time with a 3 year-old. Provided you are using tapes/DVDs or CDs for accurate oral skills and pronunciation, it could work.
the upside is: he will have taught his vocal chords to accurately make the proper sounds in each of those languages: a skill that is lost progressively after the age of 5.
The downside (the experience in our tri-lingual home) is that he will most likely be slower to communicate well in any of those languages. Our children were not really ready for kindergarten because they tended to express themselve in a mix of the languages, depending on which words were retained better in any given language.
(example: My 2 1/2 year old daughter's first full sentence; "Maman, regarde! la tormenta is coming" - declared when she saw the storm clouds approaching in the Oklahoma skies).
We cut down to two languages (French and English, deciding that Spanish would be easy to pick up again later). and this improved their communication skills immeasurably.
Mandarin is radically different from romance and germanic languages with few common reference points. I studied Mandarin chinese at UCLA and it was a true mental challenge to forget all standard European rules of grammar... of course i was considerably older than 3 at the time.
With that preface, I do have two books (not in my inventory) which, if you want, I would be happy to send to you. they are really for an older child, but may help YOU in teaching your child.
- The Chinese Language for Beginners (ISBN 0-8048-0918-6) which is a wonderful little paperback that explains how characters and pictographs are created and how to properly create the right intonations. It also has a vocabulary and illustrations suitable for a child.
Mandarin is a 4 tone language and if you put the wrong stress on a syllable, it often means something else. For example: "ma' can mean 'horse' or 'mother' and "ma" is also used at the end of a sentence to indicate that the sentence is a question. In each case, the meaning is determined by the intonation. Most of us adults (musicians excepted) simply do NOT hear the differences.
I have also a small booklet "Chinese Writing" by Diane Wolff (ISBN 0-03-013006-9) which is more on the calligraphy but explains the philosophy behind the shape of the pictographs to the concept.
and finally I have a box of "flash cards" 500 Mandarin words with the characters and the pinying spelling.
Most of this you would use in his education later after he has mastered at least a minimum of oral vocabulary.

GlendaHam, what's your take on teaching a baby/toddler sign language at the same time they are learning to talk? Does it help or hinder, and if it hinders, do they catch up in the long run?
76GlendaHam
sign language is different from an oral language because as you teach the sign, you also say the word. Babies and toddlers understand a great deal of language by the time they are 8 or 9 months old, even if they can't "say" the words. When a baby/toddler doesn't yet have the skill to SAY the word, he/she quickly gets the idea that the sign is the same thing, and they really catch on fast!! Toddler age is one of learning motor skills, and signing is more a motor skill related to communication than an oral skill which is dependant on the agility of the tongue, mouth, lips and vocal chords.
My son taught both of his children signing from an early age, and they did very well at it, long before they were able to actually verbalize their needs and wants. simple signs. Like "thirsty" "banana' "more" "I"M hungry" or "I love you" as well as "mother" and"father" signs . and it didn't seem to hinder their verbal development. He believes that he avoided the "terrible twos:" trantrums because many two year olds have tantrums because they can't tell you want they want or need. so to be able to express with signing whatever they needed or wanted without resorting to words worked out well for them.
Today those kids are teens, can sign pretty well, and are quite articulate. in English and Spanish!

There are some excellent books on raising bilingual children (I'm sure much can be carried over to three languages.) that I devoured when I was waiting for my first to be born. We really didn't have a choice about which languages since my SO is German (although he was raised in the US and is, himself, bilingual) and we were living in Germany at the time.
My favorite was The Bilingual Family, which was the most practical. Growing Up with Two Languages was also good, although there was much more emphasis on the research of how bilingualism affects learning and social interaction and less practical information.
But you're on the right track, reading to him a lot. You might try to find "harder" books that you can read to him and I found DVDs to be a great help since watching "tv" is less like learning and more like fun. While we were in Germany, the kids watched in English and when we moved to England (and a few years later to the US) we had them watch in German.

great suggestions Ridgeway, I am all FOR bilingualism, and teaching another language at an early age. But it really helps if you are in the environment. When my children were young, we lived in Spain, France and Algeria. So my French husband spoke French to the children, I spoke English, and the maid (and neighborhood children) spoke Spanish. However, like the people studied in "the Bilingual Family" my multi-lingual children did have some social issues in environments where only one language was spoken, but did well as long as we lived in countries or cities with multi-lingual environments.
It helps a lot if they are in environments where the various languages are spoken regularly. In those cases kids feel that it is "normal' to speak more than one language.
although there was a little confustion in the early years, by the time my youngest was five, they all knew instinctively which language to use with which person.
Some major cities have organizations that help. In Los Angeles, there are Saturday schools in German, Japanese, Chinese,Korean, and French, and of course Spanish speaking magnet schools.
My own children went to Fairfax high school in LA which had students from some 40 different countries.

GlendaHam,
Thanks so much for the great insight and comments. Both my husband and I speak Spanish fluently, so it is sort of in the background all the time (television, videos, Spanish speaking friends, etc) so he seems to be learning that both by our formally teaching him as well as immersion.
The Mandarin is much more of a hobby for my husband who is disabled and seriously ill. He is home quite a bit and he has learned quite well, and wants to teach our son more as an "extra". I'm not convinced our son will even pick it up at all, but am hoping to find stories my husband can use so they both get to have that 'cuddle with a book' story time as well as my husband feeling like he can practice.
It is a bit amusing to hear him combine all the languages in one sentence like your child, much to the chagrin of his grandparents! I will look for those titles you mentioned. Like I said, the Chinese is more for bonding and togetherness (which will unfortunately have an end).
Thanks again, I am grateful. As far as slower development goes, I'm not too worried as for now the boy is too advanced. I'd like to slow things down a bit (he was a 30 week preemie that has defied so many odds!).

That brings a smile and a fond remembrance of my grandmother, who spoke both English and Spanish fluently. I can remember her on occasion using sentences in which she used both languages, almost as if she just threw out the first appropriate word that came to her in either language. At other times she would start a story in English and switch to Spanish halfway through without even realizing it.
Glendaham, thanks for the insights on sign language. My daughter signs with my grandchildren, and it has been interesting seeing them sign to communicate when they can't say the words. My only frustration is that I only know a few signs myself, so I can't always understand what they are trying to say.

Thank you for your wise words...I pm'd you about these titles. As I said below about my husband, he has the hang of Chinese but I have no clue.
Again, thanks so much for your thoughtful response.

Does anyone have The Book of Common Prayer of available?
It just seems like one of those books that surely *someone* would have rusticating on a shelf, but there aren't any copies on Bookmooch that I can find!

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone is willing to part with a giftable Hardcover with dust jacket copy of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I've managed to get her the other three books in the series through BM and LT and this is the last one I need. I'm willing to smooch 2 extra points. I'm already a little late as the whole series was suppose to be a birthday gift lats August. Thanks!

I have been given a collection of Jean Plaidy books, the majority of which have condition problems - yellowed pages, wear, a few with broken spines. But if you are interested only in reading copies of some or all of the following books, I'd be happy to make a deal on points:
Caroline, the Queen, The Haunted Sisters, The Third George,
The Three Crowns, The Spanish Bridegroom, Spain for the Sovereigns,
The Heart of the Lion, The Passionate Enemies,
Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill, The Sixth Wife,
The Vow on the Heron Gay Lord Robert, St. Thomas's Eve,
Perdita's Prince, Madonna of the Seven Hills,
The Prince and the Quakeress - taken
The Goldsmith's Wife - taken
Queen in Waiting - taken
The Road to Compeigne - taken
I also have the following books in excellent condition:
The Reading List: Contemporary Fiction by David Rubel - taken
A Year of Reading by Elisabeth Ellington - taken
Read It and Eat by Sarah Gardner - taken

I am looking for Diary of a wimpy kid seems like now that the movie is out al you can find is hardcover and they want 17.00 for it I just can't bring myself to pay that much!
99cdnbookworm
>98 susiesharp: If you're in Canada and don't mind the movie cover I know that Zellers and Wal-Mart have the softcover. If you're in the US I'd try Wal-Mart and Target, you never know they may have it.
100RidgewayGirl
You might check with the schools in your area. If any are having book fairs, I picked one up for $8.19 there. Having seen the condition of the first three Wimpy Kid books, mine won't be fit for mooching by the time my kids are done with it. Strangely, they do really get kids reading. I guess the combination of cartoon and text makes it easier.

Thats you two I was at B&N the other day and all they had was hardcover I will try your suggestions.

Susie- the hardcover is only $7.70 on Amazon...

To Moniica of Message 8:
You might want to try Candida Martinelli's Italophile Site or Italophiles.com. On it, you can read books online for free. I would put a link on here, but I don't know how. I saved the website though, and if you need any help, post! I've never tried it, but a friend recommended it to me, so I thought I'd pass it along to you. Mrs. Martinelli's shops are at Zazzle and Printfection. Hope you like it!:)

105:
My normal prices at the thrift that is 3 blocks from my house are:
Kids books .10 each
Adult Paperback .33 each
Adult hardback .99 each
And they do half off sales for most holidays - so then the deals are really good.
My other thrift is normally no more than $1 per book, often only .25.
Goodwill here ranges from .49 to 2.99 depending on the title.
Library used book store is:
Kids books .25 paperbacks, .50 or $1 for hardbacks
Adult PB .50 or $1 for larger size
Adult HB $1
And they have freebie books that they don't think will sell - I've swaped quite a few of them on BM!
What can I say - I'm blessed!

And if anyone else has any must stop, local stores, please let me know. Especially if I can make them be on my way!
