looking for a book title. please help.

Hello All,

There was a book I started reading over a year ago, but I lost it and can't for the life of me remember the title or the author's name. Here's what I remember:

1) It was written by a French author in the 1920s or 30s.

2) It was about an unfortunate man who gets fired from his job after he goes to his boss' office and can't resist the urge to touch his boss' ear.

3) The main character lives with his mother--at least at the beginning of the story.

That's all I can recall at this time. I know it's not much, but I hope someone will recognize the book from this brief description.
