Fiction: Miss Buncle's Book - DE Stevenson

Non-Fiction: I know serious theology is a bit of a minority interest, but this was my only cover-to-cover non-fiction read this month and it is excellent: Evil and the Justice of God - NT Wright

Apr 1, 2010, 11:19 am

Fiction: The City and the City - China Mieville

Nonfiction: Only read two nonfiction books this month (highly unusual for me!) and neither were particularly stellar. So no pick this month.

March was a good reading month!
Difficult to choose... final verdict:

Fiction:

Mostly read this in February, but finished it at the beginning of March, so I'll count it here: Shadow Country by Peter Matthiessen

Real March read: The Balkan Trilogy by Olivia Manning

Two tomes to bookend the month.

No winner in the nonfiction category.

Fiction: The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
Yes, it's a reread, but if I didn't let myself count it I would have had three vying for its place, so I'll just go with the definite winner. ;-)

Nonfiction: I read none this month This Book is Overdue by Marilyn Johnson - forgot this one - I gave it four stars, but it's the only nonfiction I read this month (and yes, I double checked that before hitting submit a second time!).

24swynn
Edited: Apr 1, 2010, 8:56 pm

Fiction: Tinkers by Paul Harding
(No contest)

Nonfiction: Don't sleep, there are snakes by Daniel Everett
(Though I think if you ask me again in a couple of months, I'll probably remember my now-2nd-place The hanging of Thomas Jeremiah as the better book. I'll just mention 'em both since I didn't have a best nonfiction last month.)

25elkiedee
Apr 1, 2010, 9:03 pm

Fiction: The Dead Republic by Roddy Doyle

Non-fiction: Fordlandia by Greg Grandin (1 of 4 finished in March - I also rated Wedlock and Rose Macaulay 4*)

26dk_phoenix
Edited: Apr 1, 2010, 10:36 pm

Fiction: His Majesty's Dragon - Naomi Novik

Nonfiction: The Book of the Courtesans: A Catalogue of Their Virtues - Sarah Griffin

...oooh I almost forgot, we have a tie in nonfiction, as I also looooved The Devil and Sherlock Holmes by David Grann.

#20: Zoe, I had not planned on doing a quarterly thread since we already have threads for each month of the quarter. What do you think?

28_Zoe_
Apr 1, 2010, 11:11 pm

My general philosophy is "the more, the merrier" ;). And I keep seeing people here saying that they read either too many good books or not enough in a given month, so doing, say, top 5 over a three-month period might help even things out.

Two favorite fiction Heresy by Stephanie Merritt and Rooms by James L. Rubart. Everyone should read these. I could find nothing to hate in either one of these.

30Citizenjoyce
Apr 2, 2010, 3:12 am

Fiction: The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. I'm sure this will be one of my best books of the year.

Non Fiction: In the Company of Crows and Ravens by John Marzluff

31souloftherose

#27, 28, There are top reads of the quarter threads in several other groups such as What Are You Reading, but I would be happy to add my favorites here too if we had a quarterly thread.

#32: Rebecca, the quarterly thread is here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/88237

Deirdra

I'm adding Heresy to the huge tbr pile. This one sounds good!

35scarpettajunkie
Apr 2, 2010, 12:52 pm

Heresy had me scratching my head, shrugging my shoulders, slamming the book to calm my racing heartbeat, and banging the book hard against the furniture going "Take THAT you bad guys!". To me books that elicit such sharp responses are winners as we are living along with the book.

Apr 2, 2010, 10:39 pm

Fiction: His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
and the rest of the series is great!
