Wahoo!!! The new books are posted for 2007. It's time to renew!

It's that time again. I've been checking daily to see when the new year offer will be posted on the website and to see the new books planned for 2007. Always curious what the "free" books will be as well. I never met a free Folio book I didn't like. There's some great ones coming down the pipe! I've been trying to hold off ordering a couple I've wanted for a long time because I knew renewal was coming. Unfortunately, two that I wanted aren't part of the offer: Proust and the First Folio of Shakespeare. Oh well, now I can get that copy of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Epics of the Middle Ages I've wanted. And then there's The History of Western Philosophy. What else? I'm like a kid in the candy store!
2benbulben
I checked the Folio Society website and do not see them. Where are you looking to find the 2007 New Books?
3jveezer
When I log in, I automatically see the "Renewal Offer" and then under the "Our Books" tab, I can see the new books for 2007.

I floundered around a bit then found the new books and offers list at http://www.foliosoc.co.uk/books/index.php?CategoryCode=NB61

I just logged in but can see only 'new books for 2006' under the 'Our Books' tab. I can't find the 2007 books anywhere. :(
7GreyHead
Sorry, I was wrong; I can't see the new ones either. Have to pay for the priviledge I guess.

Just when you thought you'd got rid of my two cents (which always seem to go a long way, I know) I thought I'd drop a sigh of relief because I could barely afford 4 or 5 of the 2006 books but still intend to get (some of) the remainder and it's way too soon to tempt me with the 2007 treasures.
Very well, if it can't be helped and they arrive earlier than I thought... Let them come!
I suppose collecting books one has actually read and loves and will come back to often is not a sin.
Request for help please (if anyone knows and would be so kind): Being a class of 1993 member I was wondering - any wonderful editions of Kafka(novels, hort stories, collected works, anything) that I haven't noticed either before or since then? I suspect so. My radar doesn't work properly at crucial times.

Thanks for the help and so promptly :) Some of the books in reasonable condition and including slipcase almost tempt me to buy my first FS book "outside" the FS channels. I might ;)
12GreyHead
Well, Abe Books is part of the LibraryThing family so it's not too far afield. I recently bought a 'hard to find' book through them - mostly because of the LT link - and was pleased with the transaction.
13appaloosaman
The FS edition of The Trial is a good one. I think it is the only FS edition illustrated with photogrammes. These are by Nigel Lambourne whose drawings illustrate a number of the Society's editions. The photogrammes are abstract images produced from monochrome photographs. As befits the book, they are slightly nightmarish and suggestive but can't be pinned down as being clearly a photograph of anything. They are liberally scattered through the book and bleed off the pages. The book is typeset flush left with asymmetric margins - the left margins are narrow and the right margins are very wide. Most of the photogrammes are in the right margins but a few are at the foot of the page.
14kieren_valente
Yes, I have made up my mind. The Trial is ordered and I can already..(taste it is unseemingly, see it not nearly good enough) sense it!
I am indebted to you both.

Just to let everybody know. The 2007 titles actually have arrived. I got them through mail today and they are on the website now as well. I think I am going to delay my renewal as their offer does not suit me well this time. They always tempt me with a better offer around christmass. There are a few books i would like to aquire from the 2007 titles. They are The secret garden, The daughter of time and The shooting Party.
16kieren_valente
jacobnp you beat me to it ;) I was just about to proudly announce the mail had brought me a wonderful announcement today... I guess it arrived at the same time *worldwide* (how do they do it? yesterday was a national holiday here and the mail always piles up a bit after one of those)
I badly want Ten Days that Shook the World because my only copy belonged to my grandfather and is in portuguese. Both things I have nothing but fondness for (though I don't trust the translation all that much) but the fact that it's a very old paperback in poor condition (it was in an even sorrier state when it got to me) might just clinch it. Also thinking about The Secret Garden because my copies (one paperback, one audio superbly read by Helena Bonham-Carter whose recent film work I can't abide) and curious about The Elizabethan Underworld and History of Western Science.
As a matter of fact I always covet every single book each year. Then real life (in the form of "shouldn't this be better spent...?") rudely intervenes.

I am being offered:
Wonders of the World
The Lore of the Land
A is for Ox
Folio Diary 2007
Is that the same for everyone or are there different offers for different people?

Last year I was offered Leonardo and the diary. I delayed and I had a much improved joining offer in early November - I had Lives of the Mongol Warlords and the diary.
I have not yet received this year's prospectus. Still no sign of a FS Master and Margarita - a real society would listen to its members! :-)

In reply to benchamp I am being offered:
Wonders of the World
A is for Ox - A Short History of the Alphabet
Cassell's Chronology of World History
The Oxford Companion to World Mythology
The Folio Diary 2007
Slight differences, what-ho? :)
And I am so with appaloosaman on The Master and Margarita that I'm making it a touchstone even though it doesn't belong in this message board - most regrettably. There's always 2008, I guess. Which arrives in August of 2007. (sigh)

My new titles list arrived yesterday, too! Funny that the offers are different - mine are:
Wonders of the World
Cassel's Chronology of World History
The Oxford Companion to World Mythology
A is for Ox (which looks fascinating)
and the diary
From the new titles I've chosen
Italian Food by Elizabeth David (as I already have the Medit. and lost my paperback Italian Food)
The Daughter of Time
An illustrated Journey round the world
Between the Woods and the Water (to go with Time of Gifts)
and maybe an extra one, the Durrell, though there are others that tempt me.

overthemoon, at last someone with the same offers as me :)
still puzzling, though.
I think danbrady might be right about the regional variations. Without going into specifics (no need for home address or even country of residence) would you be in the general region known as Europe (except UK&Ireland) ?
Good choices, btw!

Last year I was offered Leonardo and the leather bound Times Atlas of the World which I jumped at! This year I am not so happy. I have no need for a diary and The Lore of the Land isn't even a Folio book. I think I will hold out for something better.
25overthemoon
@kieren_valente: I'm in Switzerland. Maybe it's something to do with postage (though those offered look pretty heavy!) I've never been offered so many books before.
I always look forward to the Folio diary - have it on my office desk, and when the year is done I remove the photos, stick them on card, cover them, cut into strips and use them as bookmarks!

26kieren_valente
overthemoon (and you're in Switzerland, sounds heavenly) - I'm certain that's it. We have the offers marked "Europe" and I never had so many either but I'm not complaining. Besides which they must have OUP and Cassell as partners so those aren't truly FS books but they're huge reference works in fields that I happen to be very interested in. So keep them coming...
I treat my Folio diary with almost reverence, I mean I use it (a lot) but when a new year sets in so to speak the old diary just goes to a bookshelf. I know, it's crazy - but usually I do that with lots of book-like objects if they're gorgeous enough :)

kieren - where you are doesn't sound too bad either! I'm pleased with these offers, they will be a useful addition to my reference shelf. I also kept the first diary on my bookshelf till I decided it was just gathering dust... Some of the larger and attractive pictures are actually framed and on show!
28appaloosaman
I returned today to find my prospectus. I just got the vanilla offer again:
Wonders of the world
A is for Ox - A short History of the Alphabet
The Folio Diary 2007
I shall definitely be holding out for something better! It is difficult to see the justification for offering a much more modest inducement to the bulk of members unless those abroad pay a substantially higher price for their selections.

appaloosaman I think I would *make* them want to offer me something better as well...
I see no sense in it either, I don't see why the prices should be higher in Europe and I don't think they are, though we pay an extra £4 of postage per volume. It's very awkward for the larger sets - say 6 volumes or more - as it makes them even more expensive than their good usual selves. But that's the whole point: their usual selves. The quality is just so high that the whole experience of reading (and yes, owning) them makes me disregard all that. Except in the sense I can't buy every single book I long for on the spot and sometimes not at all.

I am pretty sure that they are flexible with regards to their renewal offers. So if you call or write to them and tell them of a friend who where offered a given set, I think there is a good chance they might offer you the same if that is what it takes to get you to renew. You can't really blame them for trying to minimize their cost of renewals after all they have a busines to run. But they live on their reputation and i have found them to be more than fair in a case where I for instance got a wrong book. By the way Being from Denmark i got the offer of
Wonders of the World
Cassel's Chronology of World History
The Oxford Companion to World Mythology
A is for Ox
and the diary
I am still undecided whether to renew or not, it is a good offer but i am not that keen on ref-lit. So i might wait until they throw in some fiction

I'm totally confused because I renewed my membership last month (or at least thought I did) when Folio Society offered me to do so by purchasing just one book at half price. So I bought The Brontes: A Life In Letters. Did anyone else receive the bumpf for this offer? Now this morning I received the 2007 magazine asking me to renew my membership by choosing 4 books. I like the look of The Shooting Party, The Secret Garden, The Elizabethan Underworld, and Seeds of Change, but would rather wait for a more tempting offer.

The Folio Society Membership Year runs from September to September so all members are given the opportunity to renew their membership's from the 1st of September. However the 12th of August now appears to be the new 1st of September (see first posting by jveezer). Just like Christmas really!

My full prospectus arrived in this morning's post - but still with the original vanilla offer. For some reason we have been issued with a membership card this year - a shiny plastic one. Small gold print on the reverse earnestly informs those inspecting it that "This is not a debit/credit card" - more's the pity as it seems to serve no function!
40overthemoon
I didn't get a membership card! We used to get little folding cards with acknowledgment of membership years ago, but they suddenly stopped.
41Quokka
I didn't get a card either! I know if I wait until New Year I will receive a much more tempting offer. I wonder what the Society makes of us divulging their offers which seem to be dependent on where you live and not how many books you buy per year.
42Django6924
If you haven't read "My Family and Other Animals," do NOt hesitate to order this one! I picked it up in an idle moment wotking at the bookshop in the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, and I've read it so many times since then (a great cheer-you-up book), my old paperback is held together with tape. It's also illustrated by one of my three favorite FS illustrators, Paul Cox!
43Linda_22003
I just received the BIG prospectus yesterday - not just this coming year's books, but the whole lot of them, illustrated and with descriptions. The enticements haven't changed any, but I know I'm going way over the budget for Folios this year.....
Hah. Who am I kidding? I've never established a budget for this, let alone stuck to it.

I got the FS flier in the mail for 2007 for the USA market. I've grabbed and entered all the images from the FS website for the new books in the flier, so if/when you buy any of these books, the FS image should be available in LT for you to select as your preferred image. If not, either your flier has some books that mine does not, or the title and/or author format you use is different, so you may want to search LT under work or author. Or, just go to the LT website and grab the image for your entry.

When I returned from Boston there was an urgent reminder in my mail about renewing my membership - but still just the original vanilla offer of 'free' books. What should I get in today's e-mail but another message:

I have not received these e-mail reminders in the past. Since I learned of LibraryThing through the Folio Society's own website, perhaps someone there monitors this group for member bad attitude. Do I feel lucky? Will I have to embrace Ebay for my choices this year?

At last the improved offer has arrived. The baited hook is a choice of one of the following: Eric Hobesbawm's The Making of the Modern World, Lost Cities of the Ancient World, Set of 4 R L Stevenson novels, Montaigne's Essays, The Dorothy L Sayers Collection, Shorter Oxford Dictionary, The First Folio of Shakespeare facsimile, or Peter Pan and Wendy plus Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The choice comes with A Traveller's Chrsitmas and the Folio Society Diary.
This is definitely an improved offer (not least beacause I get some choice in what I receive) and I shall rejoin. :)
