before I put this into the bug page, I wanted to see if anyone else has an overly elongated other people's reviews of your books section, causing the browser to drop a side to side scroll bar at the bottom, and a very skinny, just a few words wide your own reviews side. It's REALLY annoying. FF 3.5.9 and Vista home. No other problems with LT pages (so far) or other pages.

Not on mine, but I do see it on yours. It's probably the result of someone doing something screwy with their review, like using a string of " " instead of proper spaces between words, so that they get a long line that doesn't break properly. I didn't see anyone with an enormously long "Nooooooooooo" or "Soooooooo gooooooood" like has happened before, so that's my guess.

so that means I can kill them if I find them?? Jerks!!!

I did a little bit of research, and it looks like the problem is shadowofthewind's review here: http://www.librarything.com/review/60611313

I suspect that when the quotes were copy/pasted, spaces were changed to non-breaking spaces. You'll note that his review page is the opposite of yours, because that's his review, and also the rightmost boundary of your review page lines up perfeclty with the end of one line of a quote.

ETA: On the other hand, I read another recent review of his without quotes (http://www.librarything.com/review/60611325) and it also has the lines that don't break, so it might not be a copy/paste thing after all.

Mine's doing that, too, both there and on the zeitgeist reviews page.

ETA: And shadowofthewind's review is on both of those pages.

the first one is in my library, the second one isn't so I think your first pick is the one. I hate it when stuff like this ruins my experience, too.

Yeah, I think the long lines have something to do with the way he wrote the reviews, since of his recent activity, two reviews are like that and the third isn't. (Could still be a copy/paste problem, I guess.)

I'm having the same problem with my review page.

My review page is fine, but the zeitgeist reviews page is messed up that way for me.

Is there a review from shadowofthewind on your pages, as well? If so, that's the culprit. If not, then someone else is doing something weird in the review box, and it may be an LT bug.

Yes, there is a review by shadowofthewind in the Recent Firsts, so that's probably the one messing up the formatting.

Ah ha! I have the same problem with my reviews page, and I think it's the same culprit. Good to know.

Would blocking that member solve the problem?

I've never blocked anyone and shadowofthewind doesn't appear in my review module.

I'm having the same issue. I posted the problem to the Bugs forum here.

Would blocking that member solve the problem?

Nope.

Blocking only does two things :
1. User cannot leave you profile comments (looks to them as though you have comments turned off).
2. Hides the user's talk messages from you (you can still on "show" if you decide you want to see a particular message).

I had that and it made me crazy so I deleted the book from my inventory so the review of it wouldn't show up anymore. All better now. Can't remember what book it was anymore, but obviously it wasn't that important to me ;-)

Yeah, all the spaces in his reviews are non-breaking spaces ( ) and there's no space in between any of the characters in the html code that would allow the line to break. Any way this could be fixed?

Tim or someone might be able to go in and edit the review, but that's pretty squidgy.

I'd hate for the NBSP to be automatically switched to a regular space by LT because that could cause unfortunate effects elsewhere.

Also, this thread makes a very good reason why we should be able to set collections to not show up on the reviews page. Then crazybatcow could've just partitioned the book in such a collection and not have to worry about the reviews page being screwed up, and also not have to actually remove the book from his library. (the other option is hope that the review falls off the page, but that could take a while, depending)

Tim's changed reviews before in a case like this; the review that time was along the lines of "booooorrrrrrrinnnnnggggg" only much more so; Tim broke the lines like

Bbbbb
oooooooooooo
rrrrrrrrr
iiiiii
nnnnn
gggggggg

and left a comment for the user. I don't think that would be out of line in this case, either.

FYI, there's also a "zero width space" in Unicode -

You can use it in the middle of text to cause (many) browsers to automatically break there.

Example:

This is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong string of text.
