~brain stumble~ Staring here at Daniel's super smooth face~ Did the books ever mention Harry or Ron needing to shave? It seems like something should have been mentioned about it, in passing. Don't boys usually start shaving in high school? Don't they, like, count every new hair sprout on their chins? *Unless you are my hubby, Rob, known in the wizarding world as 'He Who Started Shaving in the Fourth Grade' or 'Fuzzy,' for short .*

So, I've been reading Hyperbole and a Half for a few months and slowly catching up on all her posts from before I started following her. Anyway, I came across this one about grammar, and it made me think of you all. Be advised, these are cartoons she draws using Paintbrush, they're purposely bad. I recommend checking out the entire blog. I almost always find myself thinking "YEAH, I totally feel like that!" after finishing each post.

ETA: The blog is occasionally R-rated, but the grammar post is not.

The kids are outside on the porch, telling scary stories. Well, Cole and the neighbor boy are trying to tell scary stories. As they are both five, the stories are really not that scary. Anyway, it was Missie's turn and I tuned in right at the end.
Missie: "And they all turned into magical unicorns!"
Boys, annoyed: "That's not creepy!"
Missie, haughty: "It is when you remember that they'll have to clean up magical unicorn dung!"

That's what's so great about Snape. Reliability. :o)

230justjukka
Jan 30, 2012, 12:30 am

I'm just annoyed that they never died Radcliffe's hair black. Did or did the book not say that Harry's hair was jet-black? We all know his problems with the green contacts, but seriously, did he experience an allergic reaction to every hair dye they tried? Or did they think, "Meh, his hair's dark enough," which it most certainly isn't. Not when the book says jet-black.

Snape is definitely in his element in this picture, though.

Very nice graph, though I think they shouldn't have depuffed Hermione's hair. I'm just gonna keep grumbling about how they didn't dye Radcliffe's hair black, though.

NEVILLE FTW!!!

The twins also became more attractive, but I think that's due to them being given more material than just throwing quips over their shoulders.

240ErisofDiscord
Feb 7, 2012, 6:47 pm

Sigh. But what about DRACO? Sure the character's a douche, but Tom Felton is devine.

241justjukka
Feb 7, 2012, 7:04 pm

240: JK Rowling would be very pleased to read this differentiation. She's written about her concern for girls who've declared their undying love for Malfoy. I looked recently looked up this online interview for a discussion elsewhere, but I'll just share the quote:
MA: What does it do to you to see a character that you love, for people to express sheer hate -

ES: Or vice versa.

JKR: It amuses me. It honestly amuses me. People have been waxing lyrical [in letters] about Draco Malfoy, and I think that's the only time when it stopped amusing me and started almost worrying me. I'm trying to clearly distinguish between Tom Felton, who is a good looking young boy, and Draco, who, whatever he looks like, is not a nice man. It’s a romantic, but unhealthy, and unfortunately all too common delusion of — delusion, there you go — of girls, and you [nods to Melissa] will know this, that they are going to change someone. And that persists through many women's lives, till their death bed, and it is uncomfortable and unhealthy and it actually worried me a little bit, to see young girls swearing undying devotion to this really imperfect character, because there must be an element in there, that "I'd be the one who [changes him]." I mean, I understand the psychology of it, but it is pretty unhealthy. So, a couple of times I have written back, possibly quite sharply, saying [Laughter], "You want to rethink your priorities here."
I feel kinda bad for Felton. I'm hoping he's far enough removed from Draco Malfoy as an adult, seeing as he scared little kids back, in the day. Poor guy. ^^;

242ErisofDiscord
Feb 7, 2012, 7:13 pm

I think he is removed from Draco, fortunately. I've seen him in interviews and some of his other acting roles, and he seems really nice. He's got a girlfriend, is really into fishing, and can sing. Yeah. I've done my research. :P

243justjukka
Feb 7, 2012, 7:38 pm

He's always struck me as a nice person. I enjoyed his portrayal of Louis in Anna and the King, and not just because I loathed the stupid character in The King and I. Felton just did a really good job. I didn't know he could sing, though. That's awesome.

244pollysmith
Feb 7, 2012, 8:06 pm

247jugglingpaynes
Feb 8, 2012, 11:04 am

#244: I think that was what was concerning to JKR. Some kids don't really see the difference. For them, the actor is the character.

As far as acting, most actors prefer to play villains. They are simply more interesting than heroes. Catbastet once played the role of an evil Fairy Queen in a backyard production her friends put on and she scared the wits out of them. She had to assure them she was acting. :o)

Somebody's probably already posted this somewhere, but here's a quiz from beliefnet about which Harry Potter character are you. I'm apparently a blend of Luna and Dumbledore.

Is it actually possible to get results other than Luna/Dumbledore? I got it, too!

333ErisofDiscord
Mar 29, 2012, 5:23 pm

Yep, it's possible! I took the quiz again, answering the questions with answers that I am definitely not like, and I ended up with Hermione Granger. It's also possible to get Harry, Ron/Hagrid, Voldemort, and a couple of others. I think the reason we all keep getting Luna/Dumbledore is because we all have a thing in common - a love of books and reading!

I got Hagrid or Ron Weasley, but there were several questions I could have answered in more than one way.

Mandy - It means that your mind is not in the gutter. Lucky you.

346: My immediate thoughts were books, fandom, frak (Battlestar Galactica expletive), punts, putzy (yeah, I kinda made that one up), and six. Actually, the immediate thought was fandom, which led me to my other guesses. Except six. I guessed that one because it was sitting by a 6. ^^

#353 - Trust me, the second season is going to be AMAZING. I know. Miss-I'm-Too-Impatient over here has watched over a hundred clips of the season online, and I, er, looked the plot up on Wikipedia. It's all right, though! Spoilers never bother me, and in fact, they make me enjoy a movie or TV show even more. And let me just say that the end of the first episode is mind blowing. Just... mind blowing.

Ooh! Fun! My only complaint is that NOWHERE in the books does Rowling mention Lupin having scars. Now they're as prominent in fan art as Harry's off-center lightening bolt, which is supposed to be in the middle of his forehead (a pass for the P in this picture, though).
