It would benice if those could be handled a bit better.
1. The titles of works always have all words capitalised. This may be correct for English, but in German it's not, and as far as I know in Spanish it's incorrect, too... I'd suggest switching that off and taking the title from themost commonly entered title as-is.
2. This seems a bit more complicated, but here goes: "The" at the start of a title gets ignored when sorting alphabetically; it would be nice if other languages would be handled the same - In German that'd mean ignoring "Der", "Die" and "Das" at the start of a title.

Handling Der, Die and Das was talked about long ago. As far as I recall it wasn't done because there's no easy way to stop 'Die Another Day' sorting under Another.
3Thalia
I remember reading that reason somewhere too. I don't really understand it though. How many titles are there starting with "Die..." apart from "Die Another Day"? And how many German titles do we have starting with the article Die? I'd say the majority wins, in this case definitely German. But maybe that's just because it's been bugging me for a really long time that the German titles in my catalog are not sorted right because the articles are not ignored.
In our library catalog everything that is in > is ignored therefore you just write articles in every language like that. But I have no idea if something like that would work here.

Eh, I can understand when LT gives English first priority... I guess it could be possible to check the language of a work to decide if "Die" gets ignored or not, but I have no idea how much work and computing power that'd create.
The firt point with the capital letters I hope is easier to fix.

From Amazon
Die A Dog's Death by H. Kadman
Die A Little by Megan Abbott - the same title by Thomas Kennedy, Kris Obodumu
Die After Dark by Hugh Pentecost
Die Again, Macready by Jack Livingston
Die All, Die Merrily by Leo Bruce
Die And Die by E. L. Larkin
That is another 8 books and it is just those where the second word begins with an A.
Sure the German would probably win on titles. It might be less clear on actual people affected.
Even if German was handled specially it also opens up a nasty can of worms. If the German definite and indefinite articles are to be treated in the same way as the English - why not the French, Spanish, Italian and every other language under the sun?
The marking of articles by angled brackets (or any other manner) gets around this for a catalogue where data input is controlled. For LT the data that comes from Amazon and the MARC sources do not have any of this markup. The user would have to do it themselves. Most users wouldn't.

Well, if LT did that to German title, it would have to do the same for *every* foreign language, other than english. In portuguese, for exemple "O" or "A" it's the same as "The".
I believe it'd be quite an impossible job, and then sort books like 'Die Another Day"...

Well, OF COURSE for all other languages; I only pointed out German because that's the only language apart from English which I can claim I can speak.

Out of the first 1000 amazon.com results searching books for 'die' 96 German definite article and 28 English 'die' - so there you go, I was bored before lunch . . . and to see how the Touchstones cope here they are . . . and I think the English titles win on the scale of 'lighter reading'

Wow, GreyHead, I didn't intend to keep anyone from working :-) Of course, I was aware that there are more titles in English starting with "Die..." than just "Die Another Day", I just had a feeling that there would be more German titles starting that way since pretty much all of my German books have a title that starts with an article. And you'd probably get a different result if you repeated the same search on amazon.de (DON'T, it's just an assumption...).
And I totally agree that LT is an English site so it's ok that English has first priority. Also if it were changed in German, it should also be changed in every other language.

1. The titles of works always have all words capitalised.
Actually, that's not the case. It's true on the book information page, but not in your catalogue. There, I find that whether or not my titles have all words capitalised depends entirely upon the source which I searched to enter the book.
"The" at the start of a title gets ignored when sorting alphabetically; it would be nice if other languages would be handled the same
I can't imagine the mess if every book starting with "I" (English personal pronoun, Italian plural masculine article) had the first word ignored!

Well I can't even find a search site here that returns my contemporary Greek books - am I missing one?
So I have no idea how LT handles these titles.

Anke mentioned the notion of verifying with the language of a title -- that should work. If the title has a defined language of German exclude Der, Die, etc., but not The, A, An. If it's French exclude Le, La, L' ...
So long as the composition of LT is primarily English-language people/countries/books books without languages could be assumed English. If the composition becomes significantly multilingual then "no language" titles could just sort alphabetical with no article exclusion.

14argyriou
Anke beat me to it - I think it would be some work to create a list of articles to be stripped from titles in each language, then check those for each book reported as not in English. But it would solve the problem of Die a Little or I, Claudius being misfiled (unless someone says those books are in German or Italian, respectively).
