Favicon missing

The LT favicon is missing for me (using FF 3.6.9).

I see it here but 1) I have a number of threads bookmarked so it may be in there for that and/or 2) I haven;t cleared my file cache in a few days. (And I:m not in a position to do that currently to check.)

Using FF 3.6.9 as well.

gah. heh. I was trying to edit and I ended up deleting. Looking at the page again I see what a favicon is better than I did the first time. I do not have the LT up there any longer either.

I also have the LT on my blank page on this computer (FF 3.6.10) but on my laptop the blank page has the favicon of another site I visit frequently.

My favicon is fine and fully functional in Firefox.

Well, not actually functional, since all it does is sit there and look pretty.

I'm still missing it. It is shunning me after I called it pretty. :(

I re-started by browser. Maybe that helps for you too?

Nah, it is still not there and it is the next day. After computer off then on. Browser off and then restarted. Shunned, it shuns me.

Might be a corrupt file in your browser cache and/or a corrupt database within firefox:

Check the box labeled cache. If you check the box cookies, it'll log you off any websites you;re currently on as well.

It works on other websites. I have three tabs open, and two have the e for Internet Explorer (both tabs are for LT), one has SC for Second Citizen (don't ask).

I seem to recall an old bug with IE that the favicon won;t show up on the front page of a site while it will show up on the internal sites. Not sure where that bug stands now.

Like #18 I see it, but using IE8 (and any of the forrunners), I've never seen the actual favicon.

Throughout all this discussion, I've looked at my tabs in Firefox and sighed with contentment seeing the reassuring little L-in-a-box on every one. But now, suddenly and with no discernible cause, it's gone! I can still access it with the link in #17, but my tabs are sad and bare.

I'm missing it in FF (3.6.10) and in Chrome. It is present in Safari, Opera and Camino.

Why was the bug closed? I'm still missing the favicon. IE 7 or 8. I can't figure out how to see version number.

I think it was re-opened when I clicked on "Needs Discussion". At least I now have the option to close the bug, but never had an option to reopen.

I'm not having any problems with it with the current Chrome and FF on XP. One thing that took a little by surprise is that neither show the favicon next to the URL in the location box any more. They only show it on the tabs and leave the URL box solely for showing the https status.

However, it does seem to fail in IE8 and I think I know why. From wikipedia:

In 2003, the .ico format was registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) under the MIME type image/vnd.microsoft.icon. When using the .ico format, Internet Explorer cannot display files served with the standardized MIME type. A workaround for Internet Explorer is to associate .ico with the non-standard image/x-icon MIME type in Web servers.

Looking at the headers served up with the /favicon.ico response from LT I see:

The image/bmp Content-Type may be causing some versions of IE (and possibly even other specific versions of other browsers) problems.

Actually, digging in further I think there's other problems. The favicon.ico file LT is serving up is just a .bmp file renamed to .ico. That's all kinds of wrong. ICO is an actual format that's different than bmp. You're confusing IE and possibly other browsers by doing this.

ETA: Actually, in fact it looks like IE only supports favicons in ICO format. So IE will probably never see it until you make a proper ico and possibly serve it up with the right Content-Type.

In theory, no other browsers actually support BMP favicons. I'm actually surprised it works at all.

The favicon should now be working in IE. I tested IE 7/8/9/10.

It works for me in IE10, but I will note that it wouldn't show up on the tab until I went and cleared my history. Otherwise, it would show up as the icon next to the favorite if I added the site to favorites but not on the tab itself.

Mostly likely browser cache. Not sure I can do anything about that for users.

Actually from what I could tell, it was a separate cache from what we normally consider the browser cache. I don't expect LT to do try to do anything; I just wanted to make everyone aware in case they weren't seeing the right results yet.

That was a welcome if surprising change when I logged in today. Have got used to not seeing a favicon for years. Suddenly there it is.
