Non-fiction I believe. I think it was an older book as I found it used, hardcover, not too thick, about a girl from a family with a history of blindness. It's about her growing up and getting a guide dog.
The dog was a chocolate lab, I think.
I remember that at the end of the book she had some surgery that corrected her blindness.
