The new (table-style) Wishlist page has appeared on BookMooch.

It looks nice. The layout is cleaner, so the page contains only about half as much raw data (characters) as the prior layout, so that should help BookMooch's server bandwidth.

Two cautions that I see right away -

1. There is a dangerous option at the top of the page to "Empty Your Wishlist". I haven't tried it to see if you get a warning first. My advice is to stay clear!

2. On the dropdown for a Related Edition, there is a choice to "Hide This Related Edition". Yay! But be careful -- the setting appears to be sticky with no obvious way to undo it -- once something is hidden, it appears to stay that way.

Looks to me like your only options for sorting are alphabetically by title or by author's first name. Rather different from the usual last name. Might take some time to get used to.

I can sort by when I added items to the wishlist, which I *love love love*. Sometimes if I am placing an order at an actual bookstore (*gasp*) for something I need right away, I would like to add in whatever has been on my wishlist the longest.

Also a new inventory view page of similar design, and save-for-later.

And no one even complained that the site was down for 10 min :)

Uggh sorry but I HATE it so far. I have a lot of foreign editions of books wishlisted... now I have probably at least a hundred "related editions" showing up on my wishlist. I see that I can book-by-book turn that off which is good, but it's going to be a huge pain in the butt since there are so many of them. *sigh*

9chelonianmobile
Sep 30, 2010, 1:19 pm

I am having some difficulty reading my wishlist now, especially when there are related editions involved. Part of the issue is just the font being smaller, I think. (I'm not imagining that, right? The font is smaller?) Additionally, I've not been able to figure a way to see related editions when NOT logged in, but that's how I usually check my wishlist.

On the plus side, it loads far more quickly, and the available books update means that a book that's been taunting me for ages is gone! On hold account inventories, ye shall show no more!

There is (I think) a slight problem with the inventory page; as far as I can tell, we can't do a details expand to view condition notes anymore. Not good for people trying to find a condition if the person won't send to their country.

10markwp
Sep 30, 2010, 1:32 pm

more quickly as long as a wlist isn't too huge..

trying to figure out the cut-off right now -- anyone have a wlist so big it is not coming up farirly quickly?

>10 markwp: Well, I guess those of us with a wishlist under a thousand or so are doing okay . . . If anyone will have a wishlist so big it's taking forever to load, it's someone here!

I figured the detail view wasn't there, but my brain's not been so great lately. :) The detail view isn't something we really need most of the time, but it does come in handy.

are you happy with the page view bcteagirl, or would you rather have the option of page breaks?

14wester
Edited: Sep 30, 2010, 1:52 pm

My wishlist is 1128 and I think it is taking longer than before, but not problematically so. But still I would like page breaks, yes.

The smaller font can easily be remedied with Ctrl-+.

I like being able to sort by copies available. It saves having to go through the whole wishlist to see if there's something new.

15Bcteagirl
Edited: Sep 30, 2010, 1:55 pm

I am happy with or without the page breaks, either would be fine.

Wester: If you click on Counts at the top it will sort by those that are avail, or have an avail. related edition.

EDIT: I guess I need to read more careful, you said you like it, not that you would like it :P Sorry, can you tell I am having a 'slow' morning? lol

1. Personally, seeing just the first page, and then having to fetch subsequent pages, is rarely useful to me. The data you need is unlikely to be on the first few pages, unless your Wishlist is only 2-3 pages long, in which case it isn't much slower just to fetch the whole list in the first place.

2. What would be handy is the ability to select which COLUMNS appeared in the Wishlist. Most of the time, I'm only interested in mooch opportunities, so I would exclude Added and Action, leaving just Title, Author, and Count. Faster refresh for me, and more bandwidth saved for the BookMooch server (especially when you omit the Action field with all of its dropdowns). It would be fine if column-selection was an "advanced" feature, only available via a URL.

3. Also handy would be a view of the Wishlist that ONLY showed items whose Count was greater than 0 (i.e. mooch opportunities). That would be a much smaller page (faster refresh, bandwidth savings), even for people with huge Wishlists. Most of the time, when people refresh their Wishlist over and over, they are looking for mooch opportunities, not actually reading their entire Wishlist.

I must say, the new wishlist looks much, much better on the iPad than the old one did.

20markwp

So I take it the new view makes angeling harder..

Would another drop down box to 'show copies that cannot be sent to you' resolve the issue?

21auntmarge64
Sep 30, 2010, 3:39 pm

Two BIG problems that I can see:

Alphabetization by author's first name is of no use at all.
and
Alphabetization by title commonly ignores "a", "an" and "the".

I'm trying to be polite here, but really, author and title sorting are useless if they are left as they are, and I'm pretty surprised to find this on a book site at all.

So far I hate it. I liked it exactly the way it was except for being able to hide a particular edition - foreign language editions in this case.

I like to sort my wishlist by author's LAST NAME, then book title.

Isn't there any way to toggle between Show Related Editions and Hide Related Editions like there used to be - across the board?

27atimco

I love it. I am sorting by count and it's brilliant to see all the books available without even having to scroll.

28Quaisior
Sep 30, 2010, 4:01 pm

I'm finding the sort by author completely unusable with it sorting by first name.

29markwp
Sep 30, 2010, 4:02 pm

of course, as before, some of those showing as available are from inactive accounts..

But remember, a mooch and then cancel after 7+ days allows one to vaca the account,

Or if in another country with a setting to 'my country only' then a note to admins will suffice to have the account vacaed.

For my part, it's driving me crazy that the drop-down boxes are different sizes for books that have "related editions" vs. those that don't have related editions. Isn't there some way to specify a static character width? Or, failing that, to pad the text elements themselves? (Also that the drop-downs auto-click on themselves as soon as you select something, since that's not a usual internet behavior, but I can get used to that.) And I share the concerns about foreign language editions and sorting.... I'm not sure yet whether I like this more or less. I do like having the entire wishlist displayed automatically; that saves a click. I also like being able to sort by # copies available. Both are definitely functional improvements.

31MyriadBooks
Edited: Sep 30, 2010, 4:25 pm

Whew! Well, on the whole I really like the new layout, though I puzzled for a bit over how the related edition information was incorporated. A lot of my wishlist is edition-specific, and a lot of those works have many popular editions, so my wishlist seems populated with quite a lot of 'available' books that I'm not interested in mooching.

I plan to weed through and unselect the related editions, but I don't have time to that right now. :P To clean up the clutter in the meanwhile, I whisked the particular books that have have related editions (30 or so) off to my save-for-later list. At maybe a tenth the size of my wishlist, my SFL has the added bonus of loading much more quickly during the weeding process, too.

The wishlist looks different so it automatically feels a little strange but generally I like it. However, my wish list is 3549 books long and it does take quite a while for the page fresh for me.

37RidgewayGirl
Sep 30, 2010, 5:05 pm

For the most part I love it. I like the all-on-one-page thing. I have a wishlist approaching 1800 titles and it loads faster than before, that is to say, I previously had to load my wishlist and then load related editions, so all as one is marginally quicker for me.

I would like to see the books not available to me (reserved, not to your country), but I suspect that will become an option soon.

That I can turn off related editions for individual titles is huge! I have some books listed in my inventory where I'm looking only for a specific edition and since these are generally classics with dozens of related editions, I am exceedingly happy. I'll have to go through it and get familiar with the new features later when I have time to waste.

Sep 30, 2010, 5:07 pm

I wrote this comment on the blog forum but I will repeat it here and add:

John,
"the real number of moochable copies is displayed in a column. This takes into account "will not send to your country" and "reserved" copies. Those are real moochable copies." is not working!!!
Please, please please fix before you go away, otherwise this site is virtually unusable for me - most mooches I get are from angel-help!
Actually I can't believe you took away the 'mooch' button from BookMooch but anyhoo...

And please, please allow sorting by author's last name. And by title omitting preposition...

Also the new table is very hard to see - especially on a smart phone or small screen - so maybe a red for the number when a book appears as 'gettable'? Note I said gettable rather than moochable to allow for angel requests.

Add: not losing one's place on the page after an edit would also be bliss.

39Lman
Edited: Sep 30, 2010, 5:33 pm

Subtleties Mark:
Have the moochable number column FIRST in the order! After all that is what we want to do and see...
I'd prefer author, by surname next and then title, then the other columns can disappear across the page without as much impact; and can scrolled to without so much angst.

Some colour differentiation amongst all this new busy-ness would also be helpful but something much brighter for the number of moochable copies (like a green mooch button). I mourn that passing...

add:and once it is sorted it keep the last sort option on re-opening the page - at the moment it resorts back to title alphabetised by first letter. :(

likes:
*the ability to sort by title or author or by count available.
*how long a book has been on wishlist or inventory
*I like the faster loading, but I have a longer wishlist & understood that "with great wishlists, come long loading times" (sorry Spidey)

dislikes:
*small font - too small to read comfortably & my eyes aren't that old. and although the font here on LT is small, the layout/format isn't as uncomfortable.
*alphabetizing or the formatting of the alphabetizing - same as others have mentioned.
*I don't like the page reloading EACH TIME when I remove from the list using the drop downs. How about using the drop downs & THEN clicking change/save?
*I don't like the click on amazon & it doesn't open in a new tab. That should be an easy format change to implement that.

Found this out: if you remove the m/ in the URL for the wishlist, then you can see the 'not in your country' mooches. It doesn't work for the saved for later because SFL isn't publicly visible.

**I LIKE SEEING MY WISHLIST ON ONE PAGE! My wishlist is around 1000 & in the old format, I would set it to "ALL". yes, it took awhile to load, but I could roast my coffee beans, grind them & brew them.... by the time I was done, the wishlist had loaded. I didn't have time to pick the beans, though.

That's all my commenting for now.... but just for now. ;-)

Thanks for all the hard work!

Overall I like the smaller font and the streamlined design. All of things that I noticed that still need improvement have already been mentioned, particularly not being able to open actions in new tabs/windows, but here's something I just encountered:

I went to someone's LT page to see their 'also-on', which brought me to their BM inventory as usual, but there was no direct link to their bio - I had to manually edit the URL.

Page breaks... good idea for the wishlist. Mine's 2085 on BookMooch and it is very slow, slow for scrolling down too when the page is still loading. Slow too, because of slow Internet connection speed currently. I think I'll stick to the RSS feed...
PS. The sorting etc. looks good, though it'll take a bit to get used to. Great job!

Ugh. I don't like it.

I already posted on the blog-announcement, but basically what others are saying. I *hate* that wishlist-count doesn't show available books that aren't moochable by you. I hate that author-sort sorts by first name. I hate the washed-out coloring and the drop-down instead of buttons.

I've noticed that the "Not to your country books" can still be seen if you happen to have a related edition that's an "Ask First."

I just had that happen - the Ask First is an inactive member, but if I can just find an angel, I may still be able to get the book from the other person, who is "My Country Only."

I have 2178 books on my wishlist and it is SUUUUUUUUPER SLOOOOOOW.

However, I do like the sort by count feature since usually I have to ctrl F the word "Mooch" and this is much easier.

I also would like to be able to see available books even if the giver wont send them to me.

I like it all on one page

I like the font size

I miss the buttons instead of drop down menu

I also would like to alpha by author's last name

Mostly, I like it...if only it would speed up a smidge.

I do agree that the buttons were nicer. Now that I think more about it, I prefer it all in one page. Greatly prefer it to show the un-moochable books, but I know it is a work in progress and that is probably high on the priority list. I would like to see the big Mooch button back, it made things a bit more obvious.

Other than that, I really do like it.

It will take some getting use to but I think I'm going to like this.

Just one inquiry. Does anyone know if there is a way to sort of save the settings on the wishlist page. What I mean, is that I prefer to have the books listed by author (I don't personally mind if it's first or last name). Right now the default is title. I can, everytime I access my wishlist, click on "author" but it would be nice if it sorted them like that automatically. Of course, maybe I'm just too brain dead to see how to do it right now. :)

I'm really enjoying being able to permanently banish related editions which aren't what I'm after, and it is much clearer. I love all the sorting options too.

The only thing I'm not wild about is that every time I remove an item or related edition, it takes me back to the top of the page and I then have to try to find my place again in what is a rather large list. Before I could get round it by opening the 'Remove item from wishlist' page in a new tab. It's a bit annoying, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

56jjmcgaffey
Oct 1, 2010, 6:55 am

One more sorting complaint - when I sort by Count, the moochables come to the top, fine. But everything else then sorts reverse alphabetical by title. That's possibly the least useful sort, as far as I'm concerned. Would it be possible to do an LT-style double sort, where the previous sort becomes the secondary? Then I'd click Author and then Count, and the unmoochables would be sorted by author. Of course, it would all be better if it remembered the sort you left it on, too.

Other than the sorting, I like it. I would like the 'see unmoochable available' option as well - I don't get via angel very often, but sometimes I do. The going back to the top of the page is the same as the old one (and still very annoying). But I like the layout (maybe a touch darker on the alternate-line shading, it's pretty close to invisible), the font is readable for me, the extra info is useful. Aha, the title is still a link (though it doesn't look it) to the book details - so I can see it in my wishlist or another's inventory. Or my inventory. I would like it if the boxes were all the same size, though - I got trained that a bump in the column meant moochable, so all the related editions are catching my eye too much. Overall, I like it - it needs some work, but it's useful as is and leaves room for a lot of expansion (no need to fit in another button, just add whatever to the dropdown...)

I've spent ages removing just two books from the wishlist, arrrgh. Ah.... finally was able to see what happens when a wishlist book is removed. I went to the details page (which is what I usually do) of the book and clicked remove from wishlist. Very slow (my internet speed possibly, but I don't know, other sites are a LOT faster right now). The wishlist has to open (slow! slow! the whole wishlist...), which happened before, but I do not see a red message saying the book was removed from the wishlist, which was a nice confirmation that it happened. Can this be retained please?

Hmm, I thought I removed this book from the wishlist, but refreshing the details page it says it is still on! How frustrating.

Edit: Your wishlist ---> removed book.

Okay it finally says the book was removed! Doesn't say what book however.

I think I have to get used to the new lay-out style.
The site is also rather slow today.

It's a bit annoying that, when removing from view a related edition, I have to scroll down again for every single removed book, because the refreshed view goes back to the top of the page. Of course, that more an issue now, when I have to remove quite a lot translated editions, and I won't have to do this action so often in the future. It's also annoying that there is a delay of several seconds after such an action actually takes place (although that could be a browser specific issue - using FireFox 3.6.10 on Linux)

Now that the sort issues have been fixed, my only request would be to make the "sort by" column persistent, if possible -- perhaps a cookie?

I am on IE8 and I am not having any problems at all. My wishlist is only 248, but it loads in a snap.

Eeek! I can only see 1000 items in my wishlist! :) I guess that means I need a smaller wishlist. I don't see that happening though. I can wait until the next and previous buttons get added, I suppose. I am a semi-patient sort of girl.

Edited to add: Is everyone else having more luck with their wishlist loading. I counted and it took about 45 seconds for my page to reload after I click on a different sort option.

I couldn't see my 'unmoochable' copies until I went into settings (in that pull down menu on the wish-list) and ticked the box to show them. NOW THEY SHOW - YIPPPEEEEEEE!
Err...sorry for shouting. :)

Bella - do you think yours is related to the speed of your local network too. I am v. lucky (for once) to have a fast speed where I live; I do believe it may be related to that AND the size of the list.
I am NOT going to check how long yours takes me to load- I don't need any more books in my list, though I want that Mug cake recipes and I haven't even looked at it...I love it!

Thus far the new wishlist is more of a barrier to Bookmooch than a service for me. I have dial-up & the wishlist page loads so slowly that it usually times out. The 3 times I have been able to get there I was able to make one change via the drop-down menu per time, after which it tried to refresh but instead timed out.

One thing that would help, would be to give us boxes to check so we could eliminate several related editions (or whatever other operations) at a time.

Even that, though, wouldn't be much of a help if I can't access the page in the first place.

Thanks for listening.

Yes. The bouncing to the top would be much less annoying if it happened after I'd selected half a dozen books to remove, rather than after each one. And as I'm actually coming to trust the Related Editions, I've got a lot of books to remove - I have multiples of just about every book I've wishlisted.

In the blog on BM, he said that he was capping wishlist displays at 1000 until he can make a page/more feature. You can search for a book and it will show up, and probably if you resort a different 1000 will show up (assuming you can get it to show up at all) but for now the list will stop at 1000.

Oh, nice thing I just discovered - if you're getting rid of a bunch of books close together, you can do multiple 'remove from wishlist's. You just have to click fast enough that it doesn't take action before it notices your click - be careful you don't remove the wrong things, but very nice for getting rid of my many many related editions.

I've tried to load infiniteletters' wishlist, and it won't. Oh wait, after about 10 minutes it did load. The first 1000 single-word titles. In my wishlist I also noticed it sometimes separates the single-word titles from the rest, but I think only when I sort to Count.

I also tried the next biggest wishlist I could think of, Chris in Japan's http://bookmooch.com/m/wishlist/zensdaddy , and it did load the first 1000. I can also see the moochables as well.

I'm glad for the improvements... but I just spent quite a bit of time over the past few days moving things into my save for later and hiding related editions that didn't used to bother me much. Saying that, for now on, it should be just a matter of maintenance of the related editions, rather than a mass hide-out.

I love John and all he does for us!!

That said, I really still don't understand this whole change. There are SO many thing wrong with it, not just the bugs but changes that simply don't make sense and that countless people have complained about... He's already changed thing TWICE since the big change, because of people's feedback. I'm wondering if he even knew if people wanted these changes, or if this was just something he did without considering how people would react.
(Maybe Tim just spoiled me. I'm used to users being involved in changes, thanks to LT.)

I hate hate HATE that any settings-changes (specifically, showing related editions) to "wishlist" ALSO changes the settings to "save for later" (and visa-versa). It doesn't make sense!

103sporcloid
Edited: Oct 3, 2010, 12:11 am

So far, I hate the new wishlist. It's much more confusing than the old one. For example, if someone has his setting to "Only to my country" but has reserved a book for me in a different country, how do I mooch it now? It won't let me do it through the Book Details page, so I used to just click on the "Mooch" button on my wishlist. If the person would ship to my country or if he or she had it reserved for me, it would let me do it (otherwise, I would just get a message that it wasn't available to me). Now, I'm trying to mooch a book and don't even know if it's possible.

Update: Okay, I found a way. I did a random search, found a book that was available to me, then deleted its Book ID number from the url in my address bar and copied in the Book ID number for the book I wanted. I'm sure hoping I don't have to do that every time, though.

104bookel
Oct 3, 2010, 2:05 am

Not sure what you mean... but under Settings in the wishlist you can tick "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:".

Heather, take it easy! All changes require trial and error. Bugs need sorting out. It is so hard to please everyone. There are lots of positives to the new system. Give it time, things will be worked out, and as you may have seen by the blog, John does listen to those who comment.

I'm not bothered by the wishlist / inventory changes really. It's great to be able to sort by different columns, etc. The condition notes visible in the inventory will probably encourage more people to use them. Back to reading my books!

105Heather19
Oct 3, 2010, 2:13 am

One positive thing: Maybe not liking the new BM layouts will make me *read* more instead of obsessively refreshing my wishlist? lol

(bookel, I get really anxious about change. It's one of the reasons I'm so vocal about changes here on LT. It's hard for me to remember to step back and take deep breaths, sometimes.)

106bookel
Oct 3, 2010, 2:17 am

Try the RSS feed on google reader; I only check that once (or a few times) a day. I'm happy not to mooch too many right now as I have a huge pile of books to read. I think I've read six or seven books in the past week (granted one was a picture book, but it had more text than most). I know how you feel about changes though, I'm not too fond of change myself, depending on what it is.

107AnneTanne
Edited: Oct 3, 2010, 3:52 am

Apart from the speed-issues, I do like the new table-layout.

However, just because of the slow loading of the page, it would be great if one's sorting-preferences would be remembered.
E.g. for me it's really counter-intuitive that the books are sorted alphabetically according to title - for me it sounds more logical to have them sorted by author - so I have to click on the author's column header each time I view a page, to have them sorted like I want them to be sorted (and like they were sorted before).

In my opinion, the default sorting by author makes more sense than default sorting by title...

(edited to correct some spelling errors)

Oct 3, 2010, 11:21 am

Wow, John gave us another good round of fixes and improvements to the new Wishlist and Inventory pages. I can start breathing again.

I love the new Author sort (by last name). The page still displays "Danielle Steel" but internally it sorts as "Steel, Danielle". Nice. The Title sort is also improved (ignoring "The" and "A" in titles).

The "Only Show Moochable" view of the Wishlist is fixed! This small page, accessible by a URL, is now all I need to look at when refreshing my Wishlist (over and over...) to scan for new mooch opportunities.

In the Inventory page, you can now include Condition Notes, book image, binding, and a couple other columns. Beware that, at the moment, "Show book covers" applies to BOTH your Inventory and Wishlist, so if you turn them on for your Inventory, they will also be turned on for your Wishlist (?!). If your Wishlist is already large, you probably don't want to do this...

Two small improvements I'd like to see:

1. There should be a way to show/unhide previously-hidden individual related-edition Wishlist entries. Right now, if you hide a related-edition entry by mistake, it seems to be hidden forever.

2. When sorting the Wishlist by Count, it should actually sort it by "Count, then by Author, Title, Added". Right now the sort is unstable - it sorts by Count but then randomly within Count. Random sort results aren't useful. In general, when sorting on any column, all of the other columns should be included in the sort too, to avoid unstable sort results. The order of the secondary sort columns doesn't need to be configurable (just hardcode something reasonable or go from left to right).

110sporcloid
Oct 3, 2010, 11:30 am

Yes, I can set my wishlist to "Count all copies, not just moochable copies." That doesn't do me any good, though, since there's no longer a "Mooch this book" option available on the wishlist.

It also doesn't even show all of the books on my wishlist anymore. I'm not over 1000, but I can go to a book, make sure it says "This book is on your wishlist," and then find out that it isn't displayed on my wishlist anymore.

111MapleWalnut

110 >

To mooch a book from your Wishlist, can't you click the book's Title, see the Book Detail page, and then mooch the book from there? I don't angel much, so I may not the see the case you're seeing.

The book-not-showing-on-Wishlist sounds like a bug. If you have a specific repeatable example you might want to report it on the BookMooch forum.

112sporcloid
Oct 3, 2010, 12:26 pm

111> Yes, you can do that if the book is available to your country. In the situation I'm talking about, the owner doesn't normally ship to my country. This means that there is no "Mooch this book" button on the book details page.

Because he reserved it for me specifically, however, I should be able to mooch it. I used to just do it through the wishlist, since the "Mooch this book" button was always there, regardless of whether or not I could actually mooch it. Now, the button doesn't appear anywhere.

113Bcteagirl

112: That could be a real issue, I do that on occasion as well.
109: I wonder if removing the book from your wishlist then adding it back in would fix the issue of having accidentally hidden a related edition?

114RidgewayGirl
Oct 3, 2010, 2:11 pm

I'm happy that everything's loading faster than it was yesterday. I'll probably survive only being able to see half my wishlist as long as I get the rest of it back in ten days.

Overall, my wishlist is loading faster than it was before and I love being able to sort by copies available. It's a pain to remove all the related editions that I'm not interested in, but once it's done, I can see that it will just need occasional maintenance.

That the first reported bugs were quickly addressed reassures me that in a few weeks I'll be thrilled with the new set-up. Right now I'm cautiously pleased, but thankful that John and his valiant team of volunteers are willing to do so much for BookMooch.

You can see books "not to your country" or even reserved for someone else in your count if you go to settings in the drop-down menu on your wish-list and tick the option to show 'unmoochables' - I can't remember the exact words and as BookMooch is still down, can't check them either.
But it is quite obvious once you go into that settings menu...then you can see all books listed that you need angel-help for, or see if they are reserved. :)
You have to click on a book to mooch every time now, just like we had to when a book wasn't available to us, so you see all the possibilities.

109/113: if you click show related editions in your settings, or it may be a separate menu in the drop-down, it will turn - all (unfortunately I think) - related editions back on.

I have to ask this MapleWalnut - why don't you have a link to your BM account on your LT profile? What is your BM id please?

Thanks for the tips! I will have to give this a try. I haven't actually hidden an edition by mistake yet, but with me it's only a matter of time.

Regarding my BookMooch ID, I'm a "sockpuppet" here on LT, intentionally distinct from my BookMooch ID. I am a big fan of BookMooch, but I also point out shortcomings, and this sometimes draws the ire of other users (including BookMooch admins). My intentions are always good, but my dry humor can get me into trouble. Fortunately it has never gotten to the torches-and-pitchforks stage, but nevertheless it seems prudent not to leave any extra pitchforks lying around.

My save for later is much smaller & I can see moochables, but cannot get them all.

I used to really love Bookmooch and have a lot of fun, but I haven't had a book I really really really wanted in so long it must be a year. I've mooched books only to keep in the activity but they aren't books I'm excited to get.

This new wishlist is dreadful for me - the author's first name first? I can't even stand to look at the wishlist with the cognitive dissonance it causes.
... but I think my days are numbered at Bookmooch cuz I have also sent so many more books out than received ...life isn't perfect, no. I'm never asking for an "out of my country" book again since I've been insulted so many times because sometimes I'm set to "my country only" and people don't bother to look to see I've sent many, many books overseas. 120/121: You can search for books on your full wishlist with Advanced Search.

http://bookmooch.com/m/advanced_search
Put in a search term, set "search wishlists" to "yes, search wishlisted books", and put your own username in the "in member" box.

Wishlist Deletion: I finally figured out a way to get wishlist deletion to work from the book detail page.

Just copy/paste this before the ISBN and reload the page.
http://bookmooch.com/m/wishlist_del?asin=

This method also gives you a confirmation page.

Certainly... that takes time though! I was going through my wishlist anyway, finding things I might not read, and also have removed some I have found secondhand. It is always tempting to add more books when I come across them that sound good!

# 134 and 135

I used to have that info in my bio but its become such a sore point now, I don't even want to contemplate asking for a book from anyone outside the U.S. anymore and get the lecture about "fairness" blah blah blah. Thank you for your comments, skittles. I joined another site to get the books I used to only be able to get from the UK or Australia. I'll probably just sit at bookmooch and wait for the day some of my wishlist books show up:)

Ridge - I would report them but none have really changed - they just laugh and say they will reject anyone who doesn't send overseas by saying they can't afford it at this time or some such. There are always ways around the rules. Yes, there are many terrific people on bookmooch and I used to have such a great time a couple years ago maybe because there weren't so many members and it was rare to have no response, and people weren't so rude. Growth provides an opportunity to run into rude people more often I guess:) Still, you are right that I had many terrific experiences.

So I tried to give the wishlist thing some time, but I'm really not liking it. If it let me hide related editions all at once with checkboxes, great, but as it is I have to wait for the entire page to re-load for EVERY related edition I hide with the pull-down. Sigh....

149highdesertlady
Oct 7, 2010, 3:08 pm

Amy, if you are quick on the draw, you can get maybe 4-5 at a time before the page refreshes. I know I was sighing last night when I cleaned mine up. The check boxes would be an awesome addition. (It's only been 2 days for me after a long weekend away and I am still undecided)

You can hide all related editions using Settings. I personally wouldn't rely on related editions to find all of the amazon listed entries, as some are not related (linked) to each other, and some (even those that should have ISBNs but don't) are listed without ISBNs.

I have less than 700 on my wishlist and I'm also encountering 'missing' books on my wishlist. I tried removing a book from my wishlist from the book's page, and then readding it, but still all the same. Maybe 700 is also too many?

I don't mind all that much because I mooch from my feed, but sometimes I forget to take out related editions and, yes, ok, I double-mooched again recently. Dear LT catalog - can you tell me *duplicate book in your catalog* before I hit the mooch button? :)

Summary: More observations about the new Inventory and Wishlist pages, a rant about settings, a caution about related editions, and a missing RSS link.

Inventory

On the Inventory page dropdown, there is an item to EmptyYourInventory. If you select it, you get an “Are you sure” page with Yes/No buttons. So it takes two clicks to erase your inventory, but be careful. On the Wishlist page, the dropdown item EmptyYourWishlist works the same way.

On the Inventory page dropdown, there are items to ShowMoreDetail / ShowLessDetails (sic). Selecting these toggles your view of the Inventory page between 4 and 8 columns displayed. The Settings item leads to the settings page, which includes a checkbox ShowAllBookDetails. This checkbox is the SAME setting as the Inventory page dropdowns. You can use the dropdowns or the checkbox -- they both do the same thing.

Why have two redundant mechanisms (dropdown, checkbox), in different locations, worded slightly differently, that do exactly the same thing? Good question. This page is still evolving, so we might be seeing a transition underway from one settings mechanism to another. I believe the convenience of having settings in two places is outweighed by the confusion caused by the extra clutter. Then again, I am easily confused. Of the two, I prefer the checkbox approach. A settings page allows fuller descriptive text than a dropdown, there is less clutter (one checkbox instead of two dropdown items), the checkbox makes the On/Off choice clear, and the wording of the choice doesn’t change as you toggle the setting.

On the Inventory page dropdown, there are items to ShowBookCovers / HideBookCovers. Selecting these toggles the book cover images on/off (within the book Title field). On the settings page, the ShowCovers checkbox does the same thing.

The Details and Covers settings are independent of each other. You can have Details on but Covers off, etc.

As of this writing, there is a single Covers setting, and it applies to BOTH the Inventory page and the Wishlist page. If you turn Covers on for your Inventory, you have also turned them on for your Wishlist (!). And yes, a setting in your Inventory dropdown affects your Wishlist page. That checkbox is looking pretty good right now.

Wishlist

On your Wishlist page, you can show just the edition(s) that are actually on your Wishlist, or you can also show the related editions that are available but aren’t specifically on your Wishlist. Most people will want related editions On, but if you are interested only in very specific editions (e.g. hardcovers) then you might prefer related editions Off.

The display of related editions can be turned on/off en masse via a setting, or can be individually hidden via each book’s Action dropdown.

On the Wishlist page dropdown, there are items to ShowAllRelatedEditions / HideAllRelatedEditions. On the settings page, the AutomaticallyDisplayRelatedEditions checkbox does the same thing.

As of this writing, if you use the Action dropdown to hide an individual related edition, there is not an easy way to unhide it, so be careful. Toggling related editions on/off en masse doesn’t unhide it. If you can remember the parent book of the edition that you hid, you can delete the parent book from your Wishlist and then re-add it. This will cause the previously-hidden related edition to reappear.

On the Wishlist page dropdown, there are items to OnlyShowMoochable / ShowUnmoochableToo. These are NOT THE SAME as the settings checkbox CountAllCopiesNotJustMoochableCopies. The ShowMoochable and CountAllCopies settings are independent of each other.

If CountAllCopies is off, the Count column will only include copies that are directly moochable by you (i.e. the person is in your country or might be willing to send to your country). If CountAllCopies is on, the Count column includes all available copies even if you can’t directly mooch some of them (i.e. the person isn’t willing to send to your country). These copies are still “gettable”, if you can find an Angel in that country to mooch them for you.

If you select the OnlyShowMoochable dropdown item, your Wishlist page will only display books and available related editions (if on) whose Count is >= 1. This highlights your mooch/get opportunities. If you select ShowUnmoochableToo, your Wishlist page will display all books on your Wishlist (even if Count = 0) and all available related editions (if on). This allows you to see/edit your entire Wishlist.

Sticky Settings and Bookmarked Pages

If you rely on page URLs (i.e. bookmarked pages) to access BookMooch, remember that page settings are sticky. If you change a setting, logout, close/reopen your browser, and login, the setting is still remembered. So how a bookmarked page will appear now depends on BOTH the URL and any previously-saved settings.

RSS Feeds

Advanced users can use an external RSS reader to monitor changes to selected BookMooch pages in near-realtime.

Three BookMooch pages can be monitored:

1. The Wishlist page excluding related editions (to detect new mooch opportunities)
RSS link: http://bookmooch.com/rss/wishlist/en/USERID/

2. The Wishlist page including related editions (to detect new mooch opportunities)
RSS link: http://bookmooch.com/rss/wishlist_related/en/USERID/

3. The Inventory page (to watch others’ inventories for mooch ideas)
RSS link: http://bookmooch.com/rss/inventory/en/USERID/

As of this writing, the Wishlist page includes a small orange icon providing the RSS link for #1 but NOT #2 (even when related editions are turned On). The Inventory page provides the RSS link for #3. All 3 RSS feeds are still there, it is just the #2 icon that is missing. Until this is fixed, new users will have to discover the #2 link some other way.

Well, I thought it would be fine to wait ten days or so to see all of my wishlist again. We're halfway there and I'm eager to see them again. Yes, the RSS feed shows me the available books, but I'll be pleased to reunite the entirety of my desire.

I like the ability to choose which books show their related editions. It was a pain to go through and turn off the ones I wanted off, but now that it's done, I can see the value in it. I have several books for which I am searching for a specific edition, but for most I am happy with anything that comes available, so the ability to adjust accordingly is welcome.

158Heather19
Oct 9, 2010, 4:59 pm

I'm really hoping that when the "ten days" are up, the OTHER bugs will be fixed too, and not just the wishlist-count.

I'm still really annoyed and frustrated by the fact that changing certain settings in Wishlist automatically changes that setting in Save-For-Later too. I can't "hide all related editions" in Save-For-Later, because it automatically hides them for Wishlist, and I don't want that.

161amysisson

This is probably asking too much -- I'm not even sure what's possible -- but I would love if the "related edition" feature had some way to at least compare language or format. I don't know, perhaps some people like it this way. But if I have a book I want in any format, I enter every format I find into my wishlist. But if I want something in German, or on audiobook CD, chances are I already have it in English book form, so seeing 20 different editions of it is a bit much!

Oh well, this is a small thing in the grand scheme!

162wester
Oct 10, 2010, 2:39 pm

#161:
Well, that is one thing that is easier to handle with the new wishlist. You can turn off any particular related edition you're not interested in (hide this related edition, in the "Action" drop-down), whereas with the old one you either had all related editions or none. I personally find it a great way to weed out books in the wrong language/format, although it might take some time to do all.

163Bcteagirl
Oct 10, 2010, 3:02 pm

Agreed. I am possibly interested in French language editions of the English books on my wishlist, but not other languages. So I like the ability to turn of particular editions rather than a mass turn off button.

164amysisson
Oct 10, 2010, 3:10 pm

I like the ability to turn off particular editions, but when I'm looking for the audiobook of Pride & Prejudice, for example, it often means turning off a dozen MORE related editions every day. ;-) Ah well, just means I need to keep up with it!

166Bcteagirl

1) It is missing some books that I know are still moochable (related editions) while no showing the out of country which are not avail. to me. I am fine, it is just a strange trade-off. I had the related editions before and now they are gone?

2) I think I am probably just missing it, where is the 'all' button for the wishlist? With a wishlist of over 1,000 going through by page would be an incredible pain.

167skittles
Oct 15, 2010, 10:48 am

#166: you can reset the books per page to 500 at the settings on the drop down.

168Bcteagirl
Edited: Oct 15, 2010, 11:09 am

That will help! I think the related books I am missing are French language editions of English books, which I am very interested in knowing about. Not sure where they went? I still have the option to 'hide related books' so related books must be showing?

Edit: I figured out what is happening! It is only sorting the ones on the first page.. so moochable books that are not on the first page after I moved the list to show 500 are just not showing up unless I page down. Including a book on my wishlist that was actually within my country and I was lucky to catch. The page breaks seem to be messing with the sorting for people with larger mooch lists. I think we need an ALL button please (And thank you!)!

169Bcteagirl
Oct 15, 2010, 11:12 am

Moochable now also only seems to be counting the first page.

170KAzevedo
Oct 15, 2010, 11:29 am

Did you try sorting by the "count" heading? Are you saying that when sorted by count, the moochables only show up on the first page of 500?

171Bcteagirl
Oct 15, 2010, 11:35 am

Yes I am sorting by the count heading. I have it set to show 500 books per page. The effect seems to be that it puts the moochables for each group of 500 at the top of the page (3 pages for me) rather than moving them all to the top of one page. My RSS feed is not capturing all my moochables either. What this means is that right now I have to check three pages to see if any new wishlist books have come up.

169/171: Oh, that's not good. No way I can load 26x2 pages.

Edit: My 500 page has moochable editions to the very bottom. The next page starts at 1 copy and then shortly goes to 0. So the moochable sorting seems to be working properly for me.

174RidgewayGirl
Oct 15, 2010, 2:46 pm

The new pages are so much faster than the old ones were that I'm fine with needing to look at four pages to view my entire wishlist. The old format had been so slow that I was only checking once a day. So much for cutting down on the mooching!

I had grown very familiar with the old set-up and I think it will take a few weeks for it to become "home", but the speed!

175Jenni_Canuck
Edited: Oct 15, 2010, 3:04 pm

I don’t actively dislike the new formats because I haven’t seen the most recent updates but I definitely browse BookMooch less often since the changes.

Since many of these changes have been made, one has to log in to access the information provided in the new formats. I can’t log in from work (never have been able to do this although I could and still can browse the site) and my home computer is fried (my problem, I know). Without logging in, only the most basic information is available to me. Previously, I could browse inventories/wishlists/related, check condition notes, etc., and use LT (which isn’t blocked) to request an angel when necessary.

Also, the previous incarnation of the forums allowed for email communication for both receiving messages and replying to them. I’ve signed up to receive every forum by email so that I have some idea about what’s going on but since I can’t respond, which is really frustrating, perhaps I’d be better off unsubscribing and save myself all that aggravation.

I'm very happy with today's changes. I didn't like the absence of a "Mooch" button right on the wishlist page because it didn't work for books that weren't available to my country but were reserved for me (when a book owner decided to make an exception). It wasn't showing all of the books on my wishlist before for some reason, but they're all there now.

That solves both of my big concerns.

I, also, have been looking at my wishlist and browsing BM less since these changes. The most recent improvements to the change are definitely better, but I *hate* the drop-down, can't do anything without a freakin' drop-down now and my mouse doesn't seem to like the drop-downs. Always have trouble with them.

I won't even repeat my other gripes 'cause I've already talked 'em dead, I just really hope certain changes will be made soon.

What about the drop down menus don't you like? Try enlarging the text and using the menu that way, or click on the menu (not sure what the keyboard command is to select the menu, anyone know? You can tab to the drop down menu, and click ALT+down arrow to open it) and use the down arrow (or type the first letter of the option and it goes directly to it) and hit return to select the item.

186Heather19
Oct 15, 2010, 9:56 pm

I simply don't like that I have to *access* the drop-down to do every little thing that used to be easily done with a simple click, on a big prominent button. My mouse is often.... I dunno how to put it. Skippy? It jumps around, doesn't wanna move... it's tempermental. Clicking on a big-ass button was no problem. Having to use a drop-down menu for every little option, with my tempermental mouse, is a PAIN.

187bookel
Oct 15, 2010, 10:07 pm

Hmmm. Do you have an optical mouse? They run smoothly, don't skip, and allow fine motor movements. Or change the settings on the mouse in Control Panel to gain a quicker response? There has to be a way to fix it, or get a mouse that actually works for you! :)

188wester
Oct 16, 2010, 3:08 am

The wishlist on three pages is no problem for me, as the moochable books do show up on one page if I use "show only moochable". I tried it on all three pages and it shows up the same book on all three, so also on the pages where it wasn't originally.

But I can't search my save-for-later. Whatever search term I enter, it just turns up the whole list again. Search on the wishlist does work.

189Bcteagirl
Oct 16, 2010, 11:44 am

188: I am afraid that is false. If you go through each of your pages sorted not using the 'moochable now' you will see more books. At least I do. I think it omits the not avail. to your country at the very least, possibly some or the related editions as well. So if you are interested in either of those conditions you will still need to search through multiple pages each and every time you want to check your wishlist. I imagine this is a bug that will be fixed, but it is driving me around the bend.

One of the entries cut off had a related edition up for mooch that did not show, despite setting it to 2,000 books and sorting by # avail.. It seems to be cutting some off at the end. *sigh*

If I switch my wishlist to see 2000, it will show me the first 500 on the first page and then when I click over to the next page, it shows me the last 279, so it is just skipping over 3 pages of 500 each. That isn't helpful. LOL

I have changed it back to just show 500 at a time for now. I know it is a work in progress so I will just deal with it until they work all the kinks out of it.
