Part of the widespread anticipation of Apocalypse Now was, I think, our readiness for a visionary, climactic, summing-up movie. We felt that the terrible rehash of pop culture couldn't go on, mustn't go on—that something new was needed. Coppola must have felt that, too, but he couldn't supply it. His film was posited on great thoughts arriving at the end—a confrontation and a revelation. And when they weren't there, people slunk out of the theatres, or tried to comfort themselves with chatter about the psychedelic imagery. Trying to say something big, Coppola got tied up in a big knot of American self-hatred and guilt, and what the picture boiled down to was: White man—he devil. Most of the movie is a solid A. The ending sort of falls apart, though. [spoilers ahead] The movie builds and builds an increasing level of horror, all the time promising us the Mad Genius yet to come. But all we get is a sad, mumbling man and a crowd with spears. And a very annoying Dennis Hopper.
