Quiet! There's a Canary in the Library

I do like the matter-of-fact multiculturalism in Freeman's stories, especially considering when they were written. The girl's hair is strange, though, and even stranger than it seems at first because it keeps changing around. Bottom line, though: just as cute and funny as the blurb would have you believe.

This time I noticed that the characters are even more diverse than I realized, as the librarian has warm brown skin, and a boy has ebony colored skin. But again, it's just the way it is, an ideal world to inspire us and our children to help to create & enjoy.

I guess I should mention the zoo aspect, too, for families who haven't yet had that discussion about exploitation of animals vs. preservation of certain species....

A young girl visiting the library reads a book about zoo animals and imagines that she would allow all kinds of creatures to visit if she were in charge of the library.

This is a fun book about imagination and creativity. I could easily picture this as a readaloud book paired with various songs about animals. The illustrations are quite striking and perfectly complement the text.

This is a picture book about a young girl named, Cary whom wants to turn the local library into a library for animals. She fantasizes about all of the animals she will be allowing into her library. Throughout the journey, Cary explains to the animals the rules of the library. In the end, the animals become loud and Cary must tell them to leave with the help of her canary. Cary then finds a new book, checks out with the librarian and flies out of the door.

If you love the classic children's books of Don Freeman, you'll love this incredibly adorable book. It would be perfect for K-2 grade class visits to the library.

Cary knows what she would do if she were the librarian. She'd invite all the animals into the library and share her favorite books with lions, bears, peacocks, and monkeys. But the trouble is, not all animals get along with each other. That's where Cary's trouble begins.

This is a cute book. I think kids would enjoy this and I believe that if you could make it entertaining, they would actually believe that could happen. Younger kids especially would enjoy this because its a "silly" story.

Cary imagines she is the librarian and she has a special day for only animals to come to the library. A lion, bear, giraffe, peacock and many other animals come in and there is quite a ruckus, but the canary helps Cary keep order. Very clever!
