The book itself is endearing, and a picture of an earlier time, but I love this book for many reasons. I cannot imagine how many households this went through before it came into my hands, but the important things are not just what's in its pages. There are various recipes, and notes, placed in the pages, including recipes, and shopping lists, and an article from 1936 on two methods for measuring hay.
I should really take out the old recipes, scan them, and put them in plastic sleeves, so that they won't disintegrate.
I wouldn't recommend trying any of the suggested medical offerings, but the recipes published in the book are fine (as are the lovely handwritten ones that that came with my book).

This was a "standard" reference book in many rural households, especially in the Midwest. This hefty volume, with it's self-decaying cover, seems to have been equally popular in German and English. Although the reader should take some of the "receipts" with a grain of salt, we found the flea cure very effective back in the 70's.
