Book 102 - Billy Graham - Angels
Uplifting…I need some more positive Christian books to read through and this one simply leap off the shelf.
Written by the Billy Graham, the amazing man of God, who helped direct so many to Christ in his lifetime. I had never read anything by him…that will change moving forward.
Angels is a short, wonderfully uplifting little book…about Angels…how they fit into our faith and why we shouldn’t be ashamed to believe that Angels walk the Earth.
As we enter the Christmas season…and we sing about Angels…and more…what does it mean and why is it important…
In the 21st Century what we believe is under attack…sometimes through stealth…sometimes openly.
Graham begins by pointing out that sermons are show more aplenty on the topic of sin..the devil…evil…temptation…and indeed we do have to be aware…
“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”
John 3:19 ESV (Bold, italics and underlining emphasis…mine)
People…loved…the darkness…we must take every opportunity to battle against the darkness by focusing on the light.
Angels is split into 15 short chapters…taking us from ‘Angels are for real’ to ‘Angels - God’s Agents in Judgment’ (sp US) through to ‘Angels in our lives today’.
Graham has a way of opening up the text that he uses to illustrate a point unlike any other author I have known. Simple…direct…and oh so clear.
It is a challenging book as I have said we seem to be able to accept demons and the devil in the world but not that angels are real…among us…helping and defending us.
I love the personal anecdotes and maybe someday I will share what I strongly believe was true intercession in my own life…not long after I became a Christian.
Never need an excuse to share my favourite Christmas Carol

When I went through David Aikman's "Great Souls" about 2 years ago the section on Billy Graham gave me great hope. His story about how the book Angels improved a study not seen in the mainstream made me really want to read this book.
However, this book was disappointing. Graham indicates that he was disheartened by the growing interest in the occult in the 1970s, particularly demonology. He indicated that he had considering writing a book on demonology from a Christian perspective, but chose to write this instead, still dealing with the supernatural.
While I was hoping for an in depth look at Angelic connections in the scriptures, that was very shallow, instead we got a few shallow scripture references, a whole lot of anecdotes, and show more each chapter ending annoyingly with a request to accept Jesus as your savior. This may have been exactly what the 1970s needed, especially in the environment Graham speaks of, but for a converted Christian it didn't give me a deeper faith than I had had, nor did I feel it added to my tool box of evangelization. show less

This is the second time I've read this interesting and well-researched book by the well-known (and now very elderly) American evangelist Billy Graham. The book was published in 1975; in the introduction it's stated that there was an increasing interest in the occult and evil spirits in that era, but almost nothing about angels. So Billy Graham set out to fill the gap.
He essentially considers what we can know about angels from the Bible; and it's a surprisingly large amount. He describes what is known about angels and their hierarchies, and talks about those few who are mentioned by name in Scripture. He also tells many anecdotes about angels in more recent times; not just individual visitations, but times when people who had no reason show more to believe in anything beyond the material world were nonetheless stopped from doing something terrible, or guided in ways that really can't be explained any other way.
The writing is good, if a bit dry in places, and the anecdotes as a whole make up a very good case for angels being all around us constantly, quite apart from what is said in the Bible.
Quite thought-provoking; a useful volume for anyone wanting to know more about angels. Three and a half stars might be fairer. show less

This older book was recommended to me, so I gave it a try. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I learned anything I didn't already know. Since the book is almost 30 years old, some of it was a little outdated. It is still a worthwhile read.
Overall I liked this book. It didn't give me as much information as I was looking for, however, regarding angels. It was a little too generic for me. I think this would be a great book for a new believer or someone who isn't sure if they believe in them at all. At the end of almost every chapter Graham shares the gospel message which, again, isn't a bad thing..it just wasn't what I was looking for. :)
One of the few cocmprehensive books on angelology with out dipping into the fantastical or the sentimental. One of Graham's better books.
My parents requested this when they knew my father's long fight for life after a massive stroke was drawing to an end.
