Description
Struggling to put a wounded deer out of its misery, intrepid rancher Shirley McClintock stumbles over a human skeleton half-buried in autumn leaves. Then she discovers a second murder, accomplished with the same arrow that had pierced the body of the deer. The crimes are apparently unrelated, but McClintock catches the same rotten stench in both. Only proof is lacking, but that, when she finds it, cannot be used. Not without putting the person nearest her heart into mortal danger.Tags

I picked this up for some light reading, and it was just excellent! Darkly funny, nice twisty plot, and- of all things- a protagonist who is NOT a "nice," average woman written so everyone can, supposedly, identify with her (and who thus ends up in the thick of things because of acting like a doormat). The only protagonist I've encountered lately in a series that delighted me as much is Marla Mason in T.A. Pratt's excellent urban fantasy series, and that's high praise. I have just ordered the rest of the books in the series, or so I hope.

Sheri S. Tepper was born Shirley Stewart Douglas on July 16, 1929 near Littleton, Colorado. She held numerous jobs before becoming a full-time author including working at Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood from 1962 to 1986, eventually becoming the executive director. In the early 1960s, she wrote poems and children's stories under the name Sheri show more S. Eberhart. In the 1980s, she became a feminist and science fiction/fantasy writer. Her books include The Revenants, After Long Silence, The Gate to Women's Country, Grass, Shadow's End, Gibbon's Decline and Fall, The Family Tree, Six Moon Dance, Singer from the Sea, The Fresco, The Visitor, The Companions, and The Margarets. She received the Locus Award for Beauty and a World Fantasy life achievement award in 2015. She also wrote horror under the name E. E. Horlak and mysteries under the names A. J. Orde and B. J.
