Born in 1904 in Koshkonong, Wisconsin, Sterling North was the author of many books for young adults and adults, including Rascal, which was a Newbery Honor book in 1964. In 1957, he became the general editor of North Star Books, publisher of biographies of American heroes for young adult readers.
