A marvellous simple tale of one man and his six children, some he knows, some he doesn't. The novel is set in a fictitious European city and has a marvellous sense of place and geography as they move about the city and into the suburbs and beyond. The novel is witty and amusing, with emotions that feel authentic. Another class act from Jim Crace.
