waltzmn McMurtrie's book is primarily a history of the book after the invention of typecasting and printing. Those interested in the period before the Mainz Vulgate, and in the period when manuscript copying and printing still coexisted, will find few better books than Diringer's volume. The two make a good pair.

This reference book can be used as reference for the history of printing, printing types and bookmaking. Hefty, but set in (generally) big type, this book is sure to make you interested in its examples - who knows, you may even decide to work on editing and printing your own book!

Ten years ago Pascal Covici, then publishing books in Chicago, proposed to me the writing of a book aiming to cover the history and development, and the art and technique, of bookmaking.
