I purchased this book when first published. While serving as a librarian, loaned my copy to my high school library, finally had to have professionally rebound. Looks like someone tore out a picture page at the front of the book, but according to the list of illustrations, nothing is missing. I was a sophomore in high school and in the band hall when his death was announced. I was totally immersed by these events and have followed most of the events that followed in his family. Have a collection of pictures of the family. To protect the rebound book, made a book jacket with picture, in color, of caisson, and added some additional pictures to book from my personal files.

First words
A Foreword.... One yearns even now, with an almost irresistible force, to be able to file the disclaimer frequently seen at this stage of a book:  "All of the characters herein portrayed are fictitious and any resemblance to... (show all) actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental."  But the fact won't be wished away and the long night remains, not a bad dream, but a reality to haunt us all the days of our lives.  --Saul Pett
Last words
