Description

Probably the best selling book on doing in business in China ever - and undoubtedly the best ever written - Carl Crow’s 400 Million Customers is both amusing and informed. First published in 1937, 400 Million Customers is the distillation of the experiences of one of the most successful foreign businessmen ever to wash up on the China coast. Crow brilliantly explains the eternal truths about doing business in the Middle Kingdom. Enhanced with a foreword by Carl Crow expert and admirer, show more Paul French. show less

Repelsteeltje On p. 217 of the Albatross edition of 400 Million Customers Mr. Crow describes a scheme which reminded me of the Wereldtijdschrift scheme in Lijmen. Mr. Elsschot was an advertising man as well and the book was written in the thirties (same period as 400 Million Customers, though another continent). Lijmen is one of the most beautiful, witty and melancholic Dutch/Flemish novels I know. It was translated as Soft Soap (in: Three Novels, Leyden: Sijthoff 1965), as Leimen and as L'embrouille.
