I was very intrigued by this - a coming of age story, but set in a town where all the adults have disappeared. Kind of like Netflix's show "The Society," which I liked a lot more than I had expected.
But I was disappointed. Nothing is clear: how long have the adults been gone? Is society crumbling or are they making it work? Why are so many people murderers? What's up with that weird holy flood and cult compound reveal at the end (and why oh WHY wasn't there any text to that newspaper article)? Why does Ben randomly bleed? There's so much thrown into here that it all becomes a mess: the "psychics," the time jumps, the monsters which may or may not exist,
The art is also distracting; there are weird freckles/dots/hair/piercings on some show more characters (and the fact that I can't tell what it's supposed to represent is very distracting), and they all end up looking the same. I thought the girl with the shaved head who showed up at Otto's place (who looks "ready," but ready for what??) was Ben, but then we see Ben later with all her hair intact.
Ben ad Otto's relationship is very true to life: awkward and close and weird and very relatable. And I LOVED that Ben and Otto rented Pontypool, one of my all-time favorite horror movies. show less

I really enjoyed this. Jaime Hernandez punky dropout milieu, Black Hole's teen creepiness, and perhaps a tiny bit of Hate's slacker-band dynamics. Not perfect, but very good at what it does.
Sacred Heart is a coming of age graphic novel. The story concerns the children of a town called Alexandria. Their parents are on a mysterious, four-year religious pilgrimage so the kids are on their own.
There are alot of characters. We have Ben Schiller, Otto, Empathy, Josh, Tommy, Lola, Tony, Erica, and Jessie. However, the main characters are Ben, Otto and Empathy. They speak with rude, crude and lewd words and cannot get their minds off of sex. I didn't like any of them. The characters are consumed with their love lives and going to parties. Ben (a girl) takes care of her younger sister who is hiding a dark secret. Ben ardently believes that her parents will someday return. Ben also has problems with her best friend because they are show more maturing at different levels. The characters are undisciplined but show up at school every day. I found that unusual because I would have been cutting class.
The artwork consisted of black and white line drawings that were crudely drawn. It matched the crude behavior of the characters. However, I didn't care for the artwork. The story itself was all over the place. There wasn't a story per se but rather snapshots of events the characters attended.
Sacred Heart has received many positive reviews but I didn't care for it. It's just not my kind of comic. show less

I guess I don't get it. I like the story, the mystery killer, the relationships, but the ending??? Shouldn't there be more? Seriously- high school punk drama sex drugs rock and roll.
BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PARENTS!?
I think I read this before and thought I hadn't finished it, because I didn't remember how the plot went. Heh.
