Description
He is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a warrior of legendary prowess - relentless, fearless, merciless. As cold and brutal as the iron of the massive sword he wields. Bent on revenge against the unholy forces that have branded him for sacrifice, but especially on Griffith, one of the demon lords of the Godhand. But Griffith was once a man, the leader of the Hawks, a renowned cadre of elite fighters with a young Guts as its fiercest champion. Though forged in a crucible of cruelty and violence, show more nothing could prepare Guts for a confrontation with Nosferatu Zodd, a superhuman beast who slaughters Guts' comrades as easily as a scythe cuts wheat. Even Guts and Griffith are no match for the abomination's power... but something Griffith wears around his neck may well be! show lessTags

This is another excellent volume, and Berserk is quickly becoming my favorite manga. There is so much detail in the panels, while never really feeling too busy. It's great stuff, and the story is gathering steam, characters are getting developed, and we're starting to see the beginnings of the plot threads that were established in the first couple volumes.
I liked the first couple volumes, but they definitely felt a a little disjointed and out of place compared to the Golden Age volumes. Part of me wishes the story had started with Guts and the Band of the Hawk, because I think I would've been more motivated to continue, but the more I read the more I understand that those early chapters establish the supernatural aspects of the story. show more Which makes the encounter with the monster Zodd make quite a bit more sense - we've already established that monsters, gods, demons, magic, etc. exist in-universe.
I'm really, really liking Berserk. I'm not one to binge on manga, I like to take my time, but I'll definitely be making this one a priority. show less

I can't give anything lower than 4 stars for the volume with: Griffith rescuing Guts in the woods, Griffith and Guts having their water fight where Griffith is entirely naked, Griffith and Guts having one of their first marriage arguments, Griffith getting throwing against a column after trying to rescue Guts three times, and Griffith starting his second love confession . Too much good stuff happens in this volume. I'm still not a fan of the art, though older Guts at least looks better than younger Guts, and Griffith is slightly less fish-like as he ages, but the art style for humans is still quite ugly, and while the detail on battle scenes and cities is spectacular, it's just not something that would appeal to me without the Guts & show more Griffith relationship. And the way Miura draws characters with dark skin is just not great at all. Miura could draw great crowd shots with lots of unique one-off characters that look amazingly detailed and full of literal and emotional character. But well... there were a lot of flaws on an individual level.
It's very neat to see just how faithful the 1997 anime was to this part of the series, though there were definite art improvements, stylistically, in adaptation. show less

Bound now to Griffith's Band of Hawks Guts moves through the ranks and becomes a leader of one of the companies. And then he will encounter mysterious creature called Nosferatu Zodd, monster warrior who will recognize the Griffith as a rather dangerous person.
Story develops rather well, I like the way characters are presented - both courtiers and fellow mercenaries and how ambition can spell doom on any interpersonal relation.
Art as always is very good.
Recommended to fans of Berserk and horror fantasy.

This is the 5th volume in the Berserk series. In this volume we watch over the years as Guts takes greater responsibility in the Band of the Hawk and gains Griffith’s admiration through his awesome fighting skills.
This volume culminates in a confrontation between Guts, Griffith and Nosferatu Zodd..aka..Zodd the Immortal. What follows is a spectacular battle scenes that stretches the limits of both Griffith and Guts’ abilities. After the dust settles the Band of Hawk is in a better position than ever and Griffith is finally getting the adoration from nobility that he craves.
I really enjoyed this installment of the Berserk series and continue to be impressed by how much progress each story makes. The illustration continues to be very show more well done and is easy to follow.
As with previous volumes there are a ton of action scenes and they are very gory. This is a manga for mature readers only.
Overall this was a spectacular installment in the Berserk series and I continue to enjoy it a lot. I would recommend to manga fans who enjoy action-packed horror/fantasy. I look forward to continuing the series. show less

Yeah it's good, I like what's being developed and how. Some interesting character motivations, and the more that we learn about the world the more interesting it is. It's happening a little slowly but I mean I could read quicker to remedy that couldn't I...
Covers Griffith obtaining his knighthood, and the battle with Nosferatu Zodd. This makes for an interesting chapter, as we see Guts finally warming up to his comrades, and the further hint that something dire is in store for Griffith.
