Back in the day, Guts the Black Swordsman was a top slayer for The Band of the Hawk, an elite mercenary unit led by Griffith, whose calm demeanor and callow beauty belied his fighting prowess and steel will. While in a king's employ, the attraction between the king's daughter and Griffith and the growing favor of the king towards the Hawk leader raises the hackles of the king's jealous son, who plots to have Griffith summarily assassinated. But if the plot fails, the king's son will likely show more have to deal with Guts and his titanic broadsword, and the results of such confrontations are rarely pretty... or easy to clean up. show lessTags

Another excellent volume. The art is really something else, and the story is starting to pick up steam in a big way.
In this volume we get some more insight into Griffith's personality and motivations and see him playing more of the political game rather than just seeing him in battle. It's good character development, and for as charismatic as Griffith is, there's something a bit unnerving about him too.
I really enjoyed the Casca and Guts chapters, too. Casca's been a bit of an anomaly so far, and it was nice to see some of her origin story.
Berserk has cemented itself as one of my favorite manga. I really enjoyed Dragon Ball's humor and fight scenes, but the art detail and grittiness of Berserk is on another level.

Task given to Guts quickly goes the wrong way and start to haunt him. Caught in the middle of court politics and encountering rather cold and distance behavior of Griffith himself Guts will start to doubt his role and position. And then he will find himself hiding with wounded Casca behind enemy lines hoping to reach Band of Hawk's positions.
Author manages to weave the story and develop characters in a very exquisite way. Griffith's ability to recognize the people plotting against him but also his power to manipulate events and people around him is portrayed just perfectly. It becomes more and more obvious that he is endgame on his mind and that everyone else is cannon fodder.
Only silly thing (that made me giggle) are proclamations of show more rather cumbersome military unit names houted int he midst of melee - imagine armed man shouting battle-cries like We are First White Whale Assault Super Squadron :):) rather ridiculous :):)
Art as always is excellent.

This is maybe more of a 2.5 than a 2, but it's just not a great volume. There are some cute moments, like when Griffith has the leaf in his mouth, and the end of his love confession to Griffith, but it's overtaken by Griffith's weird conversation with the princess by the fountain, a lot of very ugly character art featuring the (former) prince, one of the most prolonged and stupid assassination attempts imaginable, and Griffith being sexist. The assassination thing at least kind of works because Griffith is inexperienced, has no hired assassins or anyone else he can really trust to do it (it doesn't seem like it'd be Casca's thing), and Guts is inexperienced, too. Highly so, given how badly it goes. But it's rather comical in a way that show more isn't precisely funny? It's more cringe than anything else, like the ugly character art. Miura's style still just doesn't work for me. He can draw very well detailed armor, and write very detailed political intrigue, but all of his living creatures are ugly, whether it's humans, animals, or monsters.
I am annoyed to learn the repeat knight in the 1997 anime was seemingly most expanded for that show. I find him incredibly irritating, and his presence here is still in the show but he's less there. The anime did an otherwise good job adapting this, though, with better art. show less

This is the sixth volume in the Berserk manga series. Fans of the anime series will remember this one as the episode where Casca falls off the cliff and Guts jumps after her. This is an excellent installment in this series and I really enjoyed it.
Again, I continue to be very impressed with how much story is covered in each volume of this series. We see Griffith gaining more and more prestige among the nobility and the Band of the Hawk is rising in status with him.
The first half of the story deals with Griffith and the Band of the Hawk back at the palace with the King. The second half deals with another battle that the Band of the Hawk is fighting for the king.
The illustration continues to be very well done and is easy to follow. This show more manga is categorized as seinen (targeted at adult males) and remains very violent and gory.
Overall this was another spectacular addition to the Berserk series. I continue to really enjoy the story, the characters, the illustration, and all the amazing action scenes. I would recommend to mature readers who enjoy horror fantasy manga with a lot of action. show less

Good start to this volume, before it gets to my second least favorite bit of the Golden Age arc with Casca.
Pretty spot on with the 90s Tv show
