"A resident of one of LA's toughest neighborhoods uses his blistering intellect to solve the crimes the LAPD ignores. East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the neighborhood's high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, lost children unrecovered. But someone from the neighborhood has taken it upon himself to help solve the cases the police can't or won't touch. They call him IQ. He's a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence. He charges his clients whatever they can afford, which might be a set of tires or a homemade casserole. To get by, he's forced to take on clients that can pay. This time, it's a rap mogul whose life is in danger. As Isaiah investigates, he encounters a vengeful ex-wife, a crew of notorious cutthroats, a monstrous attack dog, and a hit man who even other hit men say is a lunatic. The deeper Isaiah digs, the more far reaching and dangerous the case becomes"--… (more)

I wasn't sure at first. The plot was good, and the characters were interesting, but the voices seemed a bit off to me. Overall, though, felt it was amazingly assured for a first novel. Some pathos, a bit of humor, a sense of justice and dogs. Will definitely try more ( )

A modern Sherlock in L.A. hood. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their development with a fairly tight plot. IQ is one to enjoy. ( )

3.5 rounded up. I suspect I'll like the next book even more because much of this debut provided the background story for a very different take on a Holmes/Watson-type duo. I'm interested to see where the series goes next. ( )

Reminded me a lot of Repairman Jack (by F. Paul Wilson). This is not a bad thing. I loved the setting and the characters. Looking forward to the next one. ( )

Many thanks to Mulholland Books, via NetGalley for the opportunity to read [b: IQ|28962895|IQ|Joe Ide|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1470643432s/28962895.jpg|49190423] by [a: Joe Ide|14958880|Joe Ide|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]. This honest review is in exchange for the read.

This is a first novel by [a: Joe Ide|14958880|Joe Ide|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png], but not the last. His characters are solid and multi-dimensional. The protagonist Isaiah Quintabe is an unlikely "Detective for the Hood." He trades investigative services using a barter system. Most of his 'clients' could not afford to hire an investigator. IQ seems fearless, matching intelligence against violence. He is a stickler for justice.

Isaiah Quintabe grows a reputation as a problem solver, and fits into his moniker.

The untimely and tragic death of his brother, causes IQ to change his life goals. His priority becomes survival and keeping the apartment he and his beloved brother shared.

Usually I read through books at breakneck speed, but [b: IQ|28962895|IQ|Joe Ide|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1470643432s/28962895.jpg|49190423] was like a feast prepared by a skilled chef. I ate savoring the unique and alluring flavors of each bite.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this first novel, and I will recommend it for purchase in our library. ( )
