by Lloyd Biggle, Jr.

Description

What constitutes an intelligent being? This question is explored on the planet Donov, which is devoted entirely to artists and their works and to the tourists who come there because of the focus on art. But there are animaloids living on other planets of the galaxy who are relegated to a second-class status until a mysterious and brilliant painting appears and there is speculation that it has been executed by a non-human.

Lloyd Biggle Jr. tackles the thorny issue of apartheid and the marginalisation and harassment of ethnic minorities in the format of a breezy mystery set in the art world. Unfortunately the text is overlong and dull characters fail to draw the reader into the story.
