Allie Jamison, whom I had once hoped would be a romantic element in the Three Investigators pantheon, makes a return appearance here, but again her role seems to be that of a nuisance (being a girl, natch) who, upon further reflection, turns out to be not so unendurable after all, being a tomboyish sort who can keep up with the boys in an adequate manner. This involves an abandoned mine, lost loot from a past robbery that netted a quarter of a million dollars (I'm reminded of the scene in an Austin Powers movie where Dr. Evil, an anachronism from the past, holds the world for ransom for a cool... ten million dollars), and desperadoes who seem a little more ready to commit violence upon kids than is usual for this series.
