Hobart Floyt, a minor Terran bureaucrat, and Alacrity FitzHugh, a blackmailed spacer, travel to collect a massive, mysterious inheritance from an interstellar empire.

Earth's government is broke and sends bureaucrat Hobart Floyt to claim a legacy left to him by an interstellar mogul. To keep him safe, the government blackmails dashing spacer Alacrity FitzHugh into navigating the dangerous journey.

Alacrity brings the wit and space skills, while Hobart provides the bureaucratic knowledge, resulting in an unlikely partnership facing vast, often hostile interstellar forces.

Alacrity is trapped into babysitting Hobart while Hobart is saddled with Alacrity. Neither man is happy. These are their adventures. My Thoughts: This was a LOT of fun to read. It wasn't necessarily humorous, but the chemistry of Hobart and Alacrity, moving from unwilling guardian and client to unwilling accomplices to, just maybe, friends, was great. It was also masterfully written. There was also a ton of adventure. Space stations, war ships, hunts on alien worlds. Romance, hatred between Alacrity and said Romance's father. Good stuff. I've only read Daley's Star War's stuff, so it was good to see his own imagination at play here. I thoroughly enjoyed this and am looking forward to the rest of the trilogy. " show less

This was a fun, humorous book. A well worn plot set in a rather shallow future, but the characters were good & it all worked very well together. There are a couple of others that follow this. All great rainy day material. Candy books that I keep around to read occasionally for relaxation.

I remember enjoying these at the time I read them, though they really reminded me of Foster's Pip and Flinx books, or is that the other way around?

Hearing this on audio for the first time is a treat.
