This book is a treasure - when i have travelled internationally, i take this with me - i have a very tiny old edition.

And this book is a treasure trove of late 19th century needlework. If either 19th century needlearts or 19th century re-creation is your interest, this book is essential.

I have taught myself to crochet, to knit, to embroider, to macrame, and many other techniques from this book alone. I wouldn't want to be without it.

I do not recommend this book as a resource, as it tries to encompass so much of all the differing types of needle-work throughout history and all over the world, that it becomes no better than a dictionary of sorts. Do not look to this for instruction, nor even for verifying the history or accuracy of the techniques within.
Originally written in French in 1884, this thorough encyclopedia of needlework has photographs and diagrams along with descriptions of how to do stitching and projects. A wonderful resource for Victorian decoration.

Post people who open The Complete Encyclopedia of Needlework will say, on seeing the title of this chapter, that this information about sewing by hand is superfluous, especially in these days when the machine so often ... (show all)takes the place of the hand in sewing.
