Chapter by chapter on the complex intelligence situation in Shanghai with chapters on warlord factions, Nationalists, Chinese Communist, White Russians and Bolsheviks, British, American Naval Intelligence, German, Italian and Japanese intelligence operations and the odd cast of flamboyant characters who ricocheted between them, including Red Sorge who penetrated Japanese Navy in Tokyo before his capture and education. Misses the importance of teh Shanghai Municipal Police (Bourne, who emigrated to Canada after the war and whose descendants had something to do with founding CSIS and the Fairburn-Sykes unarmed combat SMP origins that connected Camp X, the SOE, 82nd Airborne, and numerous Commando units). Other wise an excellent survey of show more a key node for intelligence, much as Vienna and Berlin would be later. And a great read. show less
