Lady Hilary Jamison, too tall and sharp witted to get a proposal in 2 seasons, fears she is doomed to stay at home and tend to her 5 young step-brothers when her father gets an offer from a wealthy cit. Hilary is opposed but has no say since her father is in need of his wealth. She is shipped off for a visit to his home and her future in-laws. Hilary, while trying to accept her fate, confides her woes to her friend Lily. Lily, recently married to a much older man who is ill, rushes to Hilary's rescue with her friend Lord Grayden and brings her back to London. They dress her and start looking for another possible suitor. Then the Brawleys follow them to London and the plot thickens.

Others here liked this book much better than I did. I show more generally like the unusual and unique heroine, but for me it didn't work here. There are assumptions made by Hilary concerning Lord Grayden that keep them apart and could have taken a comment to clear up. I just couldn't connect to the story. I could not see the justification for some actions except to get characters to a particular location or in position for a certain action. The Halloween connection alluded to in the book description takes place at the very end of the book and seems tacked on; not scary, mysterious or particularly relevant to Halloween.

I have definitely enjoyed others from this author and will continue to read her.
