This 10-part HBO television miniseries focuses on Easy Company, a group of American soldiers in World War II, tracking their experiences from the beginning of boot camp to the end of the war. Anchored by actors Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, the series gives detailed attention to their experiences as a group, as well as the way that each of them develops individually. Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's book of real-life accounts, BAND OF BROTHERS was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who worked together on SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Hanks also directed one episode, featuring his son, Colin Hanks.

The fine HBO mini-series primarily follows E Company, 506th regiment, of the 101st Airborne from their training in the United States through the end of the war in Europe. During that period, they suffered 150 percent casualties. It describes the intense personal relationship of trust that evolved during the training of this elite group.

Band of Brothers is not an adolescent fantasy but a believably written re-enactment, so authentic that in it one encounters such features as a clinically sadistic company commander, people who can't say anything without the assistance of the f-word, officers who kill prisoners for the fun of it and also run away in battle, and looters (virtually everybody), together with cowards, anti-Semites, show more and drunks...
The final emotion left by this distinguished, serious work of cinema is a profound sadness—at the destruction of so many American soldiers necessary to bring about the destruction of the enemy and the attendant destruction of Europe. What Hitler didn't finish, the Allied air forces and the looters did. In wiping out the learning and culture of a century, the Germans committed cultural and political suicide, and, as Sir John Keegan has said, "The stain of guilt certainly remains to this day." show less

Historian Stephen E. Ambrose grew up in Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin and the University of Louisiana. Ambrose is considered to be one of the foremost historical scholars of recent times and has been a professor for over three decades. He is also the founder and president of the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans. His works show more include D-Day: June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II, Citizen Soldiers: The U. S.
