One Last Step (Tara Mills Mystery #1)

FBI Agent Tara Mills is on her first case, two hikers found dead on an Appalachian trail and another on a porch in New Hampshire. Apparently slain by a crossbow, seems a serial killer is on the loose.

Determined to find the killer before another life is taken, while facing her own personal demons may be a challenge for Tara. (But) nothing will stop her from solving these crimes, even if her life is in danger.

The story moves at a fast pace with attention to details and engaging dialog. Tara is very likable, a bit flawed with her own secrets that haunt her. Suspense filled with of edge-of-your-seat moments, I was hooked from the first page.

Overall I greatly enjoyed One Last Step and look forward to reading more in this series. I highly recommend to those who enjoy thrilling/suspense crime/mystery. ( )

Tara Mills is a brand-new FBI agent who is sent out to New Hampshire with a seasoned veteran to Hanover, New Hampshire, to solve a serial murder case. Along the Appalachian trail, hikers are disappearing, and the killer is leaving a small compass and pools of blood at each crime scene.

The writing wasn't good, and the book was painfully naive about police/FBI procedure. I am not an expert on either, but I was astonished at the lack of knowledge about chains of evidence, the lack of Miranda warnings, and the simple fact that it's unlikely that the FBI would send a mere two officers to track down an interstate serial murder case.

My recommendation? Don't bother. ( )

This is the type of genre I enjoy and this book, overall, was good. It wasn't knock my socks off fantastic, but it was a quick and easy read. The plot wasn't exactly innovative, it could have easily been an episode of Criminal Minds. However, the characters were fleshed out well and enjoyable.

One Last Step begins with a woman running for her life and ultimately speared in her back by an arrow! If that’s not enough of a shock to quell your curious then I don’t what is.

Having read several novels based around the Appalachian trail, I did anticipate some oddities.
This story focuses on the northern part of the Appalachian Trail near Hanover, New Hampshire. In this first book of the Tara Mills series, an FBI investigation begins when several people go missing and eventually found dead strategically placed along the outskirts of the National Forest.

Tara Mills is a newbie FBI agent who gets paired up with veteran agent Warren. They both wondered how this unlikely match would work given Tara’s impulse to follow her intuition over protocol. The killer narrating part of the story helps give you insight into who might be capable of such horrendous behavior. Ultimately, Tara goes rouge which puts her in extreme danger. This story wraps up nicely but does set the stage for more adventures for this novice detective.

****book 2: One Last Breath is due out November 2020! ( )
