Description

The explosive aftermath of their shocking discovery has pushed captain Grix and acolyte Vess to the furthest reaches of their solar system. Once unknowing pawns of an ubiquitous religion and pervasive mega-corporation, the now-renegade team is alone after revealing to the world that these "enemy" groups are in cahoots--but not for long. And when their crew encounters a group of ruthless spacefaring privateers, they might not be safe for long either. Volume two of the sweeping sci-fi saga is show more beautifully crafted by Hugo Award winner G. Willow Wilson (Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, acclaimed novelist of The Bird King and Alif the Unseen), and realized through the bold and singular art of Eisner winner Christian Ward (Black Bolt). show less

Another solid episode of fireflynotfirefly, as the motley fugitive crew and their jalopy of a spaceship encounter . . . space pirates! Oh dear! How will they survive this and still elude the government forces pursuing them?

I'm really enjoying the romantic relationship at the center of the book. With its fun story and decent art, I will definitely be back next volume for the conclusion.
There are some big things that don't seem developed enough, while on the other hand, some small things drag out for a long time. I really wanted to like this, as I like both creators, and madcap-underdog-space-adventures is basically my favorite genre, but I never got into it.

Writing this review for both Vol 1 & Vol 2, as I had to read the first to be ready to read the second, which is the one on nominee status for this year. This story wasn't confusing, but it, also, wasn't very compelling. Found family & romance on a spaceship, thrown from one dicey situation to the next, while trying to take down an evil corporation and religious order that are in bed with each other. The love story definitely doesn't feel earned on either side.

This is gorgeously drawn, intense space opera, but I have not read the first volume so was missing the background, and on top of that not much seemed to actually happen despite a lot of running about.
