Consumer-oriented data-based scientific information on how to clean objects and homes with products presented comparatively.

Cleaning supplies, a $10 billion dollar industry in America, with very little consumer disclosure or assistance. By keeping consumers in the dark, large monopolist industries have been able to sell the same chemicals at dramatically increased prices. One survey found 5000 brands of 39 different disposable cleaning products, none offering anything new that a home brew could not do for far less cost. [ix]

More than cleaning, also discusses such things as how to buy Toilet paper. After discussing softness, wet strength (double ply), and value -- "Actually, buying the cheap brands may turn out to be a false economy". Get two-ply. [177]

TIPS:

Dishwasher detergents. Incompletely dissolved d. can cake in the dispenser or leave a film or powder on dishes. Don't store box under sink or in moist area--it has lost its strength and dissolvability.

Carpets. Steam cleaning is better than shampooing.

Stain-removal guide: Look up the stain in the Index, which will direct you to removal procedure, classified in 9 "groups". For example, "Wine" is in Group 5--soak in warm water (1 qt), dishwashing liquid (1/2 tsp), and vinegar (1 tblspn) for 15", rinse, sponge with alcohol, wash. If necessary, soak in solution wiht "enzyme product".

Wonderful tips. No,no for newspapers for cleaning glass, use paper towels. Added cost for hand soap is simply not worth it. Consumer Report style. ( )
