Description
A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about . . . farming???? Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I'm stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I'm getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you've got the strength of ten men-though show more maybe I shouldn't have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster. I'm not used to seeing a chicken move with such grace . . . but Qi makes everything kind of wonky, so it's probably fine. Instead of a lifetime of battle, my biggest concerns are building a house, the size of my harvest, and the way the girl from the nearby village glares at me when I tease her. A slow, simple, fulfilling life in a place where nothing exciting or out of the ordinary ever happens . . . right? The first volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series-with more than 20 million views on Royal Road-now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible! show lessTags

DeadshotOmega Both books focus on the social and "Slice of Life" storyline than on action and adventure. They also both take inspiration from Chinese Cultivation as their source of magic.

Everybody was kung-fu farming...
Beware of Chicken by Casualfarmer is the first volume in the series by the same name. It is a casual cultivation story where the main character, Jin, rejects his society's vision of what it means to be a cultivator and go live a quiet life on a farm with his animals. What is his society's idea of a cultivator? One who practices the cultivation of qi in combination with mastering martial arts and tends to be a total jerk to anyone else who is considered weaker than themselves. I see why Jin rejected the idea.
This was definitely a case of the right book at the right time. Apparently I needed a fantasy slice-of-life about a cultivator who rejected the traditional cultivation route and decided to farm show more instead. Turns out that farming is a powerful way to cultivate even if no one realizes it! So many funny, laugh out loud moments in the story. Plus I loved all the animal points of view!
I listened to the audio book narrated by Travis Baldree. I think Travis had fun working on this one, especially with how he did the animal's voices.
It's straight on to Volume 2 for me. show less

In the last couple years I've discovered the Xianxia Cultivation novels as a genre and become hooked, at least on the modern ones in English. The Cradle series, A Thousand Li, and so on, are all wonderful stories that scratch a particular itch. Enter "Beware of Chicken". This novel is a fantastic spoof of the tropes of the genre while simultaneously fulfilling its best parts. This story is a wonderful relaxing journey of putting down roots. The writing is great, the understanding of the genre is clearly top-notch, and the characters are a joy.
I'm listening to this on audio and I can't wait for the second novel to be released in that form.
If you're a fan of cultivation novels you will absolutely love this. If you're new to the genre, put show more this one off until you've taken in some of the regular stories so you can really enjoy the way this bucks the trends. show less

Enjoying reading this one - I have to say it is remarkably similar to Heretical Fishing, with a twist. (For reference, this was published a year before HF)
