This is my third or fourth Tarzan adventure over sixty-odd years. What I noticed most in this one is the reliance on ponderous dialogue and description; the fondness for titles (princes, princesses, lords and ladies); and the fantasy-Africa plot (lions in jungles; chattering, terrified natives). The story is short and imaginative, but probably had more readership appeal when it was first published in the insular USA of the 1930s.

A routine adventure given life by Jane assuming leadership of the passengers of a small airplane which has crashed in the jungle. She shows she has learned much from her jungle lord, who must nonetheless rescue her and the others from the Kuvuru, a savage tribe of white men who steal women for their rejuvenation rites.

Tarzan of the Apes had heard only rumors of the Kavuru - a race of strange white savages. But when they stole the daughter of Muviro, chief of the Waziri, the Lord of the Jungle set out in search of their legend-shrouded village on a mission of rescue - or, if need be, of revenge. He could not know that his trail ran close to that of a strange group of survivors of a crashed plane - including his beloved mate, Jane - who struggled for survival against the terrors of Africa and an even worse danger within her own party. But the stranded Europeans and the ape-man were destined for a rendezvous of blood and fire - in the dreaded temple of the Kavuru.
Very nice clean, tight copy. Dust jacket is good, chipped at ends.

Edgar Rice Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago. His father, George Tyler was a distiller and a battery manufacturer. Early in life Burroughs attempted to support his family in a variety of occupations, including railroad policeman, business partner, and miner. None of these proved successful. However, Burroughs had always enjoyed show more reading adventure fiction and decided to try his hand at writing. His first attempt, written under the pseudonym Normal Bean, sold very quickly and Burroughs' career took off. Although critics and educators have not always been supportive of Burroughs' writing, the characters in his stories have entertained readers for many years. Tarzan was the most popular, earning Burroughs enough money to start his own publishing house and a motion picture company. Another character, John Carter, is the hero of Burroughs' Mars adventure series. The continuing popularity of these characters has led some critics to reconsider the value of Burroughs' writing and to acknowledge significant themes in his stories. Burroughs died on March 19, 1950. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
