It has everything: a shocking twist ending, a fiendish criminal, plenty of red herrings to misdirect the reader... Christie shows how confidently she can plot, and it's a delight seeing Poirot struggle against a psychopath murderer who could be anyone, instead of his usual murder with a closed list of suspects. This one is in my opinion superior to the more famous Murder on the Orient Express. ( ) This was another re-read for me. It's been awhile since I read The ABC Murders, and I am enjoying listening to Hugh Fraser again as he narrates these old classics from Agatha Christie. This book has all the Agatha Christie trademarks--lots of juicy suspects, both odious and pleasant, tons of red herrings, nasty villains and Hercule Poirot running circles around the police. In this book Poirot is chasing a pretty dangerous serial killer who has singled Poirot out to be the one to receive his pre-murder letters. As I had read this before a few times, I knew who the murderer was, but that did not spoil the listen or the fun for me. Listening to Agatha Christie on audiobook is a whole new experience and with Hugh Fraser narrating, a lot of fun too. Plenty of dramatic action, tangled clues, and a fresh new adversity for Poirot and his little gray cells! I like the splashiness of this case, the fact that it’s one taking place in the public eye and not behind closed doors. Those ones are also immensely fun, but seeing Poirot work this one out was a particularly nice treat to read. no reviews | add a review
