He tried to make the history of Africa interesting but since most cultures didn't write there isn't a lot to know. most evidence is what europeans wrote about and it's not always reliable. of course africa got fucked by europe but one has to get on with it and stop nursing the wounds or you just keep getting fucked by everyone--other africans included.
This is probably the least interesting of topics in this series for me, but the editors are still masterful at overcoming my reluctance to delve into the field of study. And I have to admit, I came away from the book with a heightened appreciation for the complexity and diversity of the old African civilizations. Roughly from 3500 b.c. to 1900.
