Description
Combined Fleet Decoded offers a profoundly new perspective on the naval war in the Pacific during World War II, examining every aspect of the secret war of intelligence - from radio dispatches and espionage to vital information obtained from prisoners, document translation, and even deepsea divers' recoveries of critical material from wrecks at the bottom of the sea. John Prados's text covers both the Allies and the Japanese and relates the growing intelligence knowledge to the progress and show more outcome of Pacific naval actions. Very weighty tome that focuses mostly on the intelligence war between Imperial Japan and the United States (along with some fairly brief digressions with the British and Australians). Some nuggets of information that are new since David Kahn's groundbreaking "The Codebreakers" are presented, representing research into some new corners of the intelligence war. Most of the new material, though, is comparatively minor, and readers of "The Codebreakers" or "MacArthur's ULTRA" will be familiar with the material here. One strength of the book is how deeply it goes into the history of U.S. espionage ("legal" and otherwise) against Japan in the 1920-1940 timeframe; material present elsewhere, but collected well here.
