Description

When the circus falls on hard times, Freddy concocts a plan to raise money by driving out the mice in a nearby village. However, he must also contend with angry farm mice, kidnapping, and a dangerous trek to Virginia. After all his hard work, Mr. Broomschmidt, the circus owner, refuses to accept any charity, and Freddy must find some other way to save his beloved circus. In Freddy the Pied Piper, Walter Brooks has told yet another rollicking, humorous adventure tale with wonderful show more illustrations by the inimitable Kurt Wiese. show less

Glosses over the problems with some circuses; we met this owner and the animals in previous books and we know they are really a happy family.

Love how Jinx the cat is friendly with mice and helps to figure out a way to keep them out of people's homes (and Mr. Weezer's bank) when Freddy's first and second suggestions proved ineffective. (And love that Freddy was "pig-headed" enough to keep working for a better fix.)

In this one Alice & Emma have a suitor, and a rhinoceros runs a race, and they make friends with Phil the buzzard... and, again, Freddy's disguises work unbelievably well.

Worth reading if you're already a fan, but probably skippable if you're only reading a few.

Freddy the pig is asked to come up with ideas to save Mr. Boomschmidt's circus, and his ideas include becoming the pied piper. For some reason what I remember from reading this about 50 years ago is Freddy's poem in honor of Jerry the Rhinoceros, who brings the plea for Freddy's help to the upstate New York farm where he lives during a very cold February. "You've come all this way in the vey worst weather/ For it couldn't be colder in Nome/ And we surely admire you for that."
Lions, snow drifts and mice, oh my. In the middle of one of coldest winters in the history of Central New York, Freddy tries to help out Mr. Boomschmidt's circus while dealing with a plague of mice in Centerboro. As usual everyone works together to get things to come out right.
