Description
A Victorian bluestocking with a passion for lost causes attracts the unwilling attention of a frost-hearted viscount during her tumultuous debut season in Bath in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews's fifth book in her acclaimed Somerset Stories series. West Country beauty Hannah Heywood may be quiet with fashionable strangers, but when it comes to animals in need, she has no trouble finding her voice. Newly arrived in Bath for her very first season, all she desires is to find one show more like-minded gentleman. A man of warmth and compassion, as sensitive to animals as he is to people. But if such a man exists, he dare not approach her. Not with the tall, blond, and menacing Viscount St. Clare standing in the way. James Beresford, Viscount St. Clare has often been described as a sentient block of ice. A man so cold and dispassionate, he would never suit a young lady of Hannah's disposition. And she would certainly never suit him. Focused on repairing his family's infamous reputation, James requires a diamond of the first water. The daughter of a duke or a marquess, at least, not a simple country girl with a passion for four-legged creatures. And yet, there's something about conscience-driven young Hannah that draws James, first to Bath, and then into one increasingly hare-brained scheme after another. She confounds him at every turn, subverting his expectations and threatening to do what no lady has succeeded in doing before-thawing his ice-cold heart. show lessTags

Another new favorite from the talented Mimi Matthews! Ever since the first book in the Somerset Stories I’ve been anxiously anticipating Hannah’s & James’ story, and I absolutely adored it! It’s a delightful, opposites attract romance with a bit of Pride and Prejudice vibes. I enjoyed watching the icy, austere James Beresford, Viscount St. Clare fall for the shy, kindhearted Hannah Heywood. With a sizzling undercurrent of attraction, a touch of humor, and all the delights of Bath, this sweet, Victorian romance kept me quickly turning those pages.
Hannah Heywood’s shy around most people, but when it comes to advocating for animals, she’ll passionately defend and protect them. When she meets the handsome Viscount St. Clare, show more she’s in awe of the serious, handsome man, and feels a thread of attraction. But, she doesn’t think she’s merited anything to gain his notice. When she leaves her home for a season in Bath, she’s surprised when he follows her there.
No couple could be more different. Seemingly against his will, James seeks out Hannah and is enamored by her gentle, graceful nature. His ambition drives him to marry well to elevate his family’s name. Though Hannah’s a gentlewoman, her shy nature makes him question his pursuit of her. Hannah surprises him at every turn though and thoroughly discombobulates him until he’s forced to make a choice, pursue her in earnest or settle for a marriage based on position.
I loved Hannah & James. Though Hannah’s shy & reserved, she’s also strong & full of integrity. She knows her limits & isn’t impressed by lofty titles. James learns the hard way that he can’t win her solely by who he is. Their chemistry is undeniable and I love the way their romance blossoms through one madcap adventure after another. When James’ icy exterior finally melts, watch out! I loved it when he finally gives in to his feelings.
All the stars for this lovely, kissing only Victorian romance! This series is wonderful & I love the way all the books are interconnected. Though it can be read as a standalone, it’s more enjoyable if you’ve read the previous books. I’m hoping we’ll get Jack’s story next! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided. show less

I love Ms. Matthews' books, and this sweet story is no exception. Hannah Heywood is shy and loves animals. She's not what James Beresford was looking for in a wife, but his heart wants what it wants. In true Darcy fashion, he fumbles his first advance and must adjust his attitude with Hannah.
It's a lovely story, a bit short, but charming. Hannah and James are wonderful together as they navigate their growing relationship. Another great story in this series.
