Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud

I liked this book because it had a lot of different rhyming words that kids would love to hear and say. I really think that this book was trying to teach rhyming words because for an example in the book it says, "With her hands on her hips,
and a snarl on her lips, and her dander up, Grandma yelled IT'S TIME FOR SUP." The end of each sentence rhymes. Kids love rhyming words because they are fun to say and in books that children read, it makes the read easier. Another reason that I liked this book is because of the plot. The conflict that arises in this book is that the family is trying to get down this road but there are many animals in the road and they do not know how to get them to move. It is up to one of the family members to save show more the day and get the animals to move out of the way so that they can get past. When children read this book they will see how each character tries to get the animals out of the way and they will be able to discover and think about why the animals moved when Grandma got out of the car and said something to the animals. The suspense of the book is something that the children will like as well because I know that I did. This story is engaging and well organized. "I'll shoo, that's who, brother said" "I'll shoo, that's who, sister said" "I'll shoo, that's who, mother said" "I'll shoo, that's who, father said" "I'll shoo, that's who, grandma said", all of the characters were able to try to "shoo" the animals away and the characters each went by age. The pictures in the book had fit the story very well and they had enhanced the story. The pictures matched the words in the book. For an example, when the hens were in the rud there was a picture that showed the hens in the rud along with the pigs. The overall message behind this book is how to solve dilemmas. It helps children to understand that you may need other people to help to solve problems and that everyone has their way of solving them. This story can also teach children the different names and appearances of farm animals. show less

Watching Plourde's video of this is a hoot. She's *so* dramatic. If I actually had children with whom to share, I would get a copy, and then I would see the pictures better, too. But I got enough of the experience to know this is a fun smart book, and good for kid's pre-reading skills, too, though neither you nor they will realize that while you're reading.

This is a great example of a fantasy, because animals don't get together to block the road on purpose. However, almost an entire farm full of animals end up in the "Mud in the Middle of the Rud." The setting is on a muddy road, and this is well developed in the first few sentences. The illustrations add to the muddiness and help show the frustration that the characters have with the animals.

Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of a Rud is a cute story told in the form of poetry. Its about a family trying to go down the dirt road, but they are constantly stopped by pigs in the mud. It repeats itself for every person. Then there is like a chorus after each persons story. Overall i enjoyed the cuteness of this book more than any other aspect.

Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud is a fantasy book that follows a family attempting to go somewhere. First there were pigs in the run and the Brother got out of the car to shoo them, but he couldn't! The hens were followed by Sister, the sheep by Mama, and the bulls by Papa. Even with all their combined effort, none of the animals would budge! That is until Grandma got out of the car... With a fierce snarl and hands on her hips, she yelled out "TIME FOR SUP!" at which point all the animals booked it back to the barn to eat their dinner. During the process, Grandma got trampled in the mud! The family climbed back into the car and Grandma told them it was "time to go!"

Funny book with great repetition and word play. Good for pattern or formula books. Nonsense words and sound words are prevalent.

This is a good story for first graders as I has a paragraph of text on every other page and it has many different rhyming words. The book tells a story of a family and all of their barn animals who escaped and how the family tires to get the animals back into their pens.
