One of the very great long poems of the 20th Century: a meditation on history (sacred and secular), liturgy, culture (mainly Roman and British), and the capacities of language. This deserves to be much better known than it is.
Too dense and convoluted for even my somewhat academic tastes, its moments of lyrical beauty and historical arcana make it worth the effort if you are in the proper mood.
