Hey, Wait...

Description

This superbly evocative graphic novella by the award-winning Norwegian cartoonist Jason (his first appearance in the English language) starts off as a melancholy childhood memoir and then, with a shocking twist midway through, becomes the summary of lives lived, wasted, and lost. Like Art Spiegelman did with Maus, Jason utilizes anthropomorphic stylizations to reach deeper, more general truths, and to create elegantly minimalist panels whose emotional depth charge comes as an even greater show more shock. His sparse dialogue, dark wit, and supremely bold use of "jump-cuts" from one scene to the next (sometimes spanning a number of years) make Hey, Wait... a surprising and engaging debut. show less

Muy duro lo que cuenta Jason en este título, con pocos diálogos pero una expresividad en las viñetas y en el blanco y negro increibles. Fuerte y emotivo sin necesidad de grandes discursos. Genial
Not for me. Too maudlin, and I thought the artwork was very ordinary (although I suspect that was exactly the point.) Seemed like a book of regrets to me; hard to follow the non-linear plot. Lots of other people liked it though.
I wasn't wild about this graphic novel. The illustrations were meh, and partly made no sense to me. The story was slow and at times felt pointless. It had some moments where I could easily see boys in real life having the same conversations and reactions to things, but other than that, it just isn't what I like in a graphic novel.

This short and simple (sometimes wordless) read is about two childhood friends who decide to start a Batman fan club. In order to join, the make up this requirement that the person joining has to jump up and grab this tree branch and swing (see cover) out over a cliff, and back. Well, when Jon's friend gets ready to jump and swing, Jon yells "Hey, wait." His friend ends up dying from this event, even though we show more don't actually SEE it... we see the aftermath, the funeral, the mourning, and Jon growing up living a life he didn't really want... with the implication being he hated his life and traced back the root of his unhappiness to that one event.

Mixed with skeleton-faced characters (why?), this was a somewhat depressing read. I am sure some people love this comic style (I don't) and love the story (meh)... would I recommend it? Possibly. Depends on what the person wants.

This was short and sad. I liked it.
Short, simply illustrated, sad little graphic novel.
feels like a short-film-as-comic
