The Beautiful French doll Babette has been kidnapped by pirates and it's up to a Raggedy Ann and Andy to rescue her. After taking a magical balloon ride to Fairyland, Raggedy Ann and Andy meet a most unusual doll -- a soft flannel Camel with wrinkled knees. Stolen from his own nursery years earlier, the Camel Joins Raggedy Ann and Andy in their search for Babette. Along they way, they make friends with a tired old horse, travel to the Land of the Loonies, and reunite a little girl with her brother.
It was cute and I loved the idea of two stuffed dolls going on an adventure. My mind could not get around the constant references to Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy by their full names. It was tongue twister in my mouth and in my head. I had to stop. The illustrations were gorgeous.
I did like this book as a child, and had my own Raggedy Andy who lived on my bed. :-) I haven't seen a copy of this book for many years and have lost track of Andy. Do children still read this sort of thing, I hope?

Author, illustrator, and cartoonist Johnny Gruelle was born in Arcola, Illinois on December 24, 1880. Throughout his life, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for numerous newspapers and magazines including The New York Herald and McCall's. In 1914, he received his first book commission which was a set of illustrations for a volume of show more Grimms' fairy tales. He is best known for creating the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and stories. It all started when he gave his daughter Marcella a dusty, faceless doll that was found in his mother's attic. He drew a face on it, named her Raggedy Ann, and created stories about her for Marcella. Eventually, he decided to recreate the doll and stories for other children and in 1915, he patented and trademarked the design of the doll. He published the first book and matching doll in 1918 with the P. F. Volland Company. Many more stories and the Raggedy Andy doll soon followed. He died on January 9, 1939.
